Irrational name dislikes

I'm not pregnant, have 3 children and not having any more, but I love baby names. My best friend is having a baby soon and so have spent a lot of time recently talking and thinking about names. I've come to realise that there are some names that I really really can't stand and for absolutely no apparent reason at all.
I would like to apologise to anyone and everyone, I really don't mean to offend anyone but I just can't help it or have any reason for it, but here are some of mine to start with - you notice a theme!! 😂 😂
Poppy
Ruby
Scarlet
Rowan
Anyone have any?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

The other concern I have is names like “Grace” or “Willow”. The ones I know are all rather large stout and very shouty and so far from being willowy or graceful that their names seem quite cruel.

lexi

georgia spelt jorja

Sunshines123 · 22/08/2020 09:18

As I’m more in the traditional camp with names, I have an irrational disliking for these kind of boys names: Logan, Mason, Elijah, Hunter, Dylan, Jaxon, Carter, Harley, Harvey, Brody, Hudson, Jayden, Caleb ....etc.

My sons name has been listed loads on here 😂 and I’m not offended - would be boring if we all liked the same names!

Bunnybigears · 22/08/2020 09:19

My DSs name is here, I am not offended. Its an irrational dislike, the name I mentioned I irrationally dislike is a perfectly reasonable name and I'm sure people with that name are lovely. I have an irrational dislike of custard, I have never tasted it I might like it but the thought of it makes me shudder. Doesn't mean Inlook down on people who like custard.

See, I know there are people in the world who roll their eyes at our name choice. They also roll their eyes at other parenting choices I've made. This thread was never going to not be divisive, and it's not going to enrich anyone's life, so it's not worth diving into if you know you're going to be upset by your child's name being here. My name has popped up repeatedly, I don't care. Nor do I judge people who use these names. I absolutely don't judge kids with them. They're just names.

There are so many threads on here that I avoid because I know they'll get my blood pressure up. Life is way better if you just walk on by sometimes.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/08/2020 11:21

I knew I’d think of more....
Danny.
I love the name Elizabeth providing its said properly. I heard a mum calling out” Elizbi’ get here” the other day. I inwardly cringed.
Lillian.

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 11:29

Probably said it before but Ava and Ada are unpleasant
as are Adele, Adeline, Adelaide, Avril and Sylvia.

I mentioned long names for boys as a dislike. Examples are:
Cassidy
Rafferty
Strange how there aren't any little boys called Kennedy.

Raphael - Raph. sounds like riff raff
Nathaniel - Daniel or Nathan are better (not keen on Nathan but I know a nice on)
Dominic - it's always Dom when they are older.
Sebastian - Little Britain
Elias - short name but long on syllables.

Long names to justify a nn, usually quite contrived and/or a name in it's own right. Elias/Eli, William/Liam, Theodore/Theo, Lucinda/Luciana/Lucy, Juliana/Julia/Julie

Magicbabywaves · 22/08/2020 11:43

None of my children’s names here!

Must say I don’t get the Otty/Ottilie (sp) trend. Not keen on Lola or Enmie either.
Boys names, Joshua or Jake.

Miljea · 22/08/2020 11:44

I was doing fine... until my DS1's name came up. 😡, I went.... No, actually, I went 😂 as it has come up twice for being 'boring' because that was sort of what I was aiming for, him and his DB, both with apostle names (one hasn't been mentioned at all, tho).

Why click on these threads if you're going to be offended??

And why not have a bit more confidence in your choice of your DCs names (as many on here have been?).

As for snobbery, quite a few of these names are associated with being vair upper class!

Then my own name came up.... 😤 😂 Had to laugh as no one is called that these days; except transvestites in down-market working men's clubs 😂

CoastRoad · 22/08/2020 12:10

Alas, I don't spend enough time having out with transvestites in any class of working men's club to know what they're likely to be called!!

Yes, people should calm down about their name choice (or indeed their name) appearing. I don't like names like George or Arlo or Louis or Mia or Sophie, but the people who name their children these are highly unlikely to approve of what I called my son, which was so unusual it didn't appear with a number on the name stats for his year of birth. It only ever figures on here under 'names I wasn't brave enough to use'.

AriesTheRam · 22/08/2020 12:32

Freddie
Sebastian
Molly
Maisie

AriesTheRam · 22/08/2020 12:35

@lampshadery that's my name and I agree!

20viona · 22/08/2020 12:37

Evie and Evelyn. Fucking hate them! Over used and I imagine a little sap having those names 😂😂😂

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 12:49

I like Evie but it's a bit overused. Eve is nice. Eva is not nice, Evelyn is horrible, Evangeline is too vangy, Evelina sounds like a dodgy diet product and Everly/Everleigh is Beverley without the B.

Said what I think of Ava already, but Avery is a set of scales in the post room.

What is wrong with strong sounding names with some consonants in.

SpangleBug · 22/08/2020 12:52

I forgot Jude. I hate it. Every time I say it makes me think of meat stuck in my teeth.(Don't ask me why)

bananamonkey · 22/08/2020 13:06

Always hated the name Malcolm for some reason but I guess babies these days are safe from being saddled with that horror.

Nice to see a random spelling of my own name here, a variation of DC1’s and DC2 has an Irish name even though we aren’t Irish (well my gran was if that counts) so we’re a triple whammy 🤣

SebandAlice · 22/08/2020 13:09

I agree @babynamelover

I reported but MN are letting it stand. Time for me to find a new site I think.

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 13:15

Jude is awful. I don't even like it as short for Judith. Judy is nice though.
Julian is also awful.

SapphosRock · 22/08/2020 13:20

My DD has a double barrelled name and I've seen both on here (although not together!) maybe I've failed her in life.

Haven't seen DS's name on here yet.

Mashingthecompost · 22/08/2020 13:25

@MikeUniformMike yeah! Consonants! I definitely think anyone wanting to buck the trend needs to go for stronger consonants.

Mashingthecompost · 22/08/2020 13:26

I quite liked Jude. It doesn't work with my SN but it's a potential family tribute so it crossed my mind for a mo. But I think I like the way it looks more than its sound.

SpangleBug · 22/08/2020 13:43

Yes. I'm sure there's some sort of Snowflake Society out there. Has it only just occurred to you that people like and dislike names. They probably don't like your clothes, your taste in decor or the car you drive. Likewise mine. A lot of people don't like my name. It doesn't bother me. So long as I like it why should I care?

Mashingthecompost · 22/08/2020 13:48

It's interesting that of all the things posted on here, a thread about disliked names is the thing that upsets people enough to make them want to leave.
