How do you pronounce that? Sorry for my ignorance

inappropriateraspberry · 20/08/2020 16:41

Roo-un.
Piran is another one.

inappropriateraspberry · 20/08/2020 16:43

Cador is unusual. Jago's a popular one. Or Jethro? 😆

SingingSands · 20/08/2020 16:43

I went to school with a Ruan and a Struan. I have a nephew called Struan.

I like both. Unusual, but easy to pronounce and spell and have a nice "sound" to them.

Cornishwench · 20/08/2020 16:45

Roo-an
Rew-an

My friends boy is called Ruan and he's 7. Didn't like it when I first heard it but it grew on me.

PlantPotting · 20/08/2020 16:51

If this name sounds anything like Rowan/Rohan and you say you're wanting something "unusual", I'd strongly suggest avoiding it. Take it from someone with a baby daughter called Rowan who is surrounded by similar sounding names (RoMan being the main culprit as it's the fastest rising boy name but Reuben Rohan Roan Ronan all nearby!)

lemorella · 20/08/2020 17:05

Senen
Seren
Mawgan
Jowan
Jacca

I do like Ruan though.

BillysMyBunny · 20/08/2020 17:07

I’ve not hear it before but I really like it.

Firebird83 · 20/08/2020 17:34

I like it but I heard someone say it sounds like “ruin” and that did put me off a bit.

BibiThree · 20/08/2020 17:49

I grew up knowing a Ruan and he was absolutely lovely, so really like the name.

OhBuggerandArse · 20/08/2020 17:54

Really lovely name.

I know a Lowen and a Kitto.

ZebraKid71 · 20/08/2020 21:49

I love it, but there are so many Rowan and Romans near me I think it would just blend in.

I also like Jago and Piran. There are some really lovely cornish names.

MissMoodyMoo · 21/08/2020 00:35

What about Ruadh? Pronounced roo-ah

bee222 · 21/08/2020 07:17

I remember my mum being a childminder when I was a young and she looked after a child called Ruan (this was in Cornwall). It has always stuck with me because it is such a lovely name.

bee222 · 21/08/2020 07:24

I quite like Brae (Cornish word for hill but also used as a boys name)

Whatsyourflava · 21/08/2020 08:07

Not sure the world needs another Roman/Roman/Rowan/Roan derivative. Don't use Ruan if you're wanting something even remotely unusual sounding.
Love Jago

bee222 · 21/08/2020 08:58

It’s a word in the Cornish language and has been used as a traditional Cornish boys name for years. Don’t be so ignorant.

MiddleClassProblem · 21/08/2020 09:01

I think it’s a nice name but I do think he would get lots of “you ruined it” type jokes at school.

Surely you’re aware that many people choose names because they like the sound/look of them rather than because they have an intimate knowledge of Cornish history?
GinWithASplashOfTonic · 21/08/2020 09:06

As a Cornish girl I do love Cornish names
Love Ruan - pronounced Row - an
or Ru-an
Also Rowan similar pronunciation to Ruan
Jowan
Jorran
Jago
Piran

villainousbroodmare · 21/08/2020 09:08

Love it.

WouldBeGood · 21/08/2020 09:10

Makes me think “mother’s ruin” 😃

Of course I’m aware of that. The OP however asked for a Cornish name and going by her surname I suspect she is Cornish herself, so is likely well aware of her Cornish heritage. I don’t expect non Cornish people to understand the Cornish language or heritage, but I would expect them to be respectful to traditional names outside their culture.

Merename · 21/08/2020 09:13

Lovely!
