Love the pp suggestion of Jacca

I don’t expect non Cornish people to understand the Cornish language or heritage, but I would expect them to be respectful to traditional names outside their culture.

How does “being respectful to traditional names outside their culture” look in practice? Does it mean not using those names? Because seriously, you’re on a hiding to nothing if you think you can police people’s use of names outside their own heritage.

I never said that. The OP is Cornish and asked for Cornish names. I’ve got no problem with anyone using a Cornish name if they want to.

I thought ruin, too. I generally dislike name words with a gentle sound change (I considered Lowell for ours but it felt like it never got out of my mouth properly, the consonant in the middle doesn't change the vowel sound enough). Also, PP mentioned Brae which is cute but where I'm from, some people would use it to mean 'beat up' as in "Gemma's going to bray Fiona"...

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 21/08/2020 09:37

I know a few Carnes

Ruan minor is a lovely village on the Lizard
Not heard of as a name before but rather like Brae

bee222 · 21/08/2020 09:39

Being respectful is not making comments like “no one needs another derivative of Roman” about a name of a Cornish Saint that has been used as a traditional boys name in Cornwall long before some NCT mums decided to make it “name of the year” in their circles (I say that as an NCT mum)

OP - Ruan is a beautiful name. I knew a few growing up and I always associate the name with gentle and polite boys. It’s lovely.

bee222 · 21/08/2020 09:39

*make Roman “name of the year”

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 21/08/2020 10:19

Petroc?

Cornishwench · 21/08/2020 13:18

Thankyou everyone
I work in a primary school and havent come across any Romans or Rowans so hadnt realised its popularity.
I love Jago but it sounds too close to Trago ( mills) haha
Any more suggestions welcome for my new Cornish Pasty in the oven xx

Love Ruan

Whatsyourflava · 21/08/2020 16:47

Sorry I haven't read all of the posts so I'm a bit behind but sorry that my comment has offended people. I totally appreciate Ruan is a name with its own origins. I was only pointing out similarities to other names as OP specified they'd like something "unusual". If OP hadn't mentioned that requirement I probably wouldn't have commented. Just wanted to help OP but definitely didn't want to be rude.
Sorry again, not looking to argue whatsoever 🙏 I can definitely put my foot in it sometimes so very sorry if that's what I've done here

Whatsyourflava · 21/08/2020 16:53

Hope I made myself clear. I just meant that whilst the name Ruan might be unusual , it probably won't sound or feel that unusual when there's so many similar sounding names in the top 100 that are rising fast. Just wanted to make OP aware of this. I didn't mean that all the similar sounding names are exactly the same or have the same history.

AdelaidePlace · 21/08/2020 19:42

Caden
Austol
Arthek ( Art/Arty would be cool NN.')
Kensa ( is this your first baby...it means first) ..though could be Ken or Kenny as a NN, love the full name not so sure about the NN
Opie
Pascoe
Massen

Loving Cornish names!

Ha! Trago Mills!! Trago would be a good name if you weren't in Devon or Cornwall 😆

Really like Ruan

fairislecable · 23/08/2020 17:23

I once suggested that Carrick would be a lovely name (Carrick Roads) but it was then pointed out that Carrick used to be on the side of the dust carts.

My suggestion was not used!

chocolateoranges33 · 23/08/2020 19:24

How about Lowen? One of the mums in my NCT group named her son this as her husband is cornish and they wanted a cornish name. It's not too popular but easy to spell and pronounce
