What do you think of this for a baby?

I have a ten year old Martha Smile and I love her name even more today than I did when we gave it to her. It is easy to spell and pronounce (although she was Marfa to her friends for a while as a toddler, which was very sweet) and it is elegant for an adult. It is moderately popular and there is one other in her primary school.

I have been previously told on MN that it is a dowdy Victorian servant's name Hmm. In real life we get lots of compliments on her name. The only reason I wouldn't have used it would have been if we were still living in an area where 'th' is routinely pronounced 'f' in the regional accent; Marfa is sweet from toddlers but it would have grated on me from everyone else.

Love it! I considered it but have a Pippa instead

BoogieFeet · 19/08/2020 17:15

Love it Smile

Mrsfrumble · 19/08/2020 17:43

It’s my favourite girl’s name ever and my 7 yo DD’s name. It’s fairly common around here but I don’t mind (and neither does she). DD was named after the Tom Waits song, but she prefers Martha My Dear by the Beatles (yes, she knows it’s about a dog!)

PlantPotting · 19/08/2020 17:48

One of my favourite names. Love it

PlantPotting · 19/08/2020 17:49

Also if you look at the statistics, popularity has been falling over the past few years so it's not about to boom, it's actually doing the opposite!

Great choice @Mrsfrumble I've never met one but have my eye on this name for future

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 19/08/2020 17:53

Love it! Especially like the nickname Moss for Martha. Lots of them in my family tree, but unfortunately our surname didn’t work at all for either Martha or Moss (made at least one, if not both, comical) so didn’t use it, but have an Esther instead, which I think has a similar flavour.

PlumsInTheIcebox · 19/08/2020 18:05

@Mrsfrumble Tom Waits was a partial inspiration for us too! The BBC drama Silk started when our Martha was a baby and I have really fond memories of watching Maxine Peake's character, who was a whip-smart, tough Martha.

daisypond · 19/08/2020 18:14

I’m not keen. It’s quite dated to me. I know several in their very late teens and early 20s. I think it’s dowdy too - sorry!

lovinglife321 · 19/08/2020 18:20

I wanted Martha for my now 9 year old but my husband said no - I absolutely adore it.

ApplestheHare · 19/08/2020 18:20

I know a couple of baby Marthas and it's cute on them Smile

vagoftheday · 19/08/2020 18:21

Bigbouncingbaby · 19/08/2020 18:23

Ex said no so we had a Darcey 😭

dollypops15 · 19/08/2020 18:25

Beautiful

Joolsin · 19/08/2020 18:27

Absolutely love, love, love it. Although, I will say it was one of my grandmother's names and when I was a child, I thought she had a dreadful name (she was a lovely Granny, though!). I'm not sure when my opinion of it changed!!

HollyHocks13 · 19/08/2020 18:28

I have a 10 year old Martha - she absolutely loves her name, as do I. We don't know any others. It's an elegant, classic name I think Smile

EvilEdna1 · 19/08/2020 18:31

I have a 15 year old Martha. Still think it's a lovely name.

bridgetreilly · 19/08/2020 18:44

You mean for a person?

Yes, lovely.
