Name for our boy - Isaac, Jacob, ???

Hello, we had a little boy three weeks sooner than expected due to early induction and are struggling to decide on a name. My lead contender was Jacob but now he’s arrived, he’s looking more like an Isaac, I don’t know why. Foolishly today we told our DCs that we are thinking of calling him Isaac and now that’s what they’re calling him although I feel like we hadn’t completely decided! Aargh. Need to make up our minds fairly speedily.
What do people think of these options? Any other ideas? Our surname is Wood.
Jacob / Jake
Isaac
Alexander - I don’t love Alex though!
Joseph - though not sure about Joe
Sam - but don’t love Samuel as the long form
Arthur - family name, might go for this as middle name
Also having stupidly googled Isaac far too much, people say children might be teased because Isaac = ‘I suck’ which obviously with our surname could be a bit of a problem. I would literally never have thought of this. Is it just a MN thing??

I don't care for biblical names, so Jacob and Isaac would be out for me.

How about Xander Wood?

babydisney · 10/08/2020 02:39

? Our surname is Wood.
Jacob / Jake--reminds me of max brannings real name off eastenders
Isaac - nice name isaac Arthur Wood sounds like it flows well
Alexander - too over used don't like the name imo
Joseph - unfortunately he will probably be called Joe but the name is nice
Sam - agree Samuel is abit Meh you could just use Sam or even samson?
Arthur✔️ yes love this I wouldn't rule out for a first name either

Pippilangstrumpfi · 10/08/2020 07:47

I would only choose Jacob if you like Jake as imo they all end up as Jakes.

Isaac can be teased with I suck. I also find it quite religious.

Of your other suggestions I would probably choose Arthur.

daisypond · 10/08/2020 07:52

I would avoid Isaac.
Not keen on Jacob either.
Joseph is nice. But he will get Joe.
Sam is nice. But I’d go for Samuel formally.
I like Alexander.
Arthur is OK.

I’d go for Alexander out of those. I like the flow best with your surname. Then Joseph.

formerbabe · 10/08/2020 07:56

Isaac is a lovely name but I with your surname and what you mentioned, maybe not.

Jacob is lovely and I love the nn Jake...goes well with your surname.

Don't go for Alexander or Joseph if you don't like Alex or Joe as they will get shortened

Ricekrispie22 · 10/08/2020 08:24

Suggestions:
Ivan
Reuben
Nathaniel
Jesse

BirdsDoIt · 10/08/2020 08:33

Thanks for all the replies. Do people really think Isaac would get teased like that? Anyone out there with Isaacs? I’m quite taken with the idea that Isaac means laughter! And I like the nn Zac.
I like Jake just as much as Jacob so that works.
We’ll think a bit more about Arthur - I love it but my DH isn’t sure for a first name.
For the reasons above I reckon that Alexander and Joseph are out - I’m just not sold on Alex or Joe.

I have an Isaac and he's never had "I suck" teasing. So many people spell his name wrong though...

Whatsyourflava · 10/08/2020 08:37

Isaac is mainstream enough now that I'd be really surprised to hear people teasing I Suck. I suppose it's possible but all names have a possibility of teasing. Wood had a possibility for teasing too.

I love Isaac and Jacob and Arthur !!

formerbabe · 10/08/2020 08:39

I'd never heard of I suck in relation to the name Isaac but I'm imagining a teacher doing the register or saying Isaac Wood in assembly and wondering if immature teenage boys would start teasing...I'm not sure I'd risk it.

Grufallisfriends · 10/08/2020 08:52

No way would I risk Isaac Wood Blush. Imagine the teasing potential at secondary school.

BirdsDoIt · 10/08/2020 08:58

FjorGynAndHotWater that’s good to know, thank you! DH reckons I’m overthinking and if we like Isaac we should just go for it Smile Hmm...

If you like Isaac just go for Zack?

User27aw · 10/08/2020 09:25

No to Isaac Wood too much potential for teasing.

FrancesFlute · 10/08/2020 09:28

Are you religious? I only ask as we are and specifically chose Biblical names and I like your list!

Other options:
Zachary if you like Zac.
Joshua
Nathan
Benjamin
Reuben
Caleb

I like Alexander from your list - could try for a Xander nn as a PP suggested.

123Dancewithme · 10/08/2020 09:30

Please don’t go with Isaac Wood!

Flappingflamingo · 10/08/2020 09:31

I have a Samuel isaac so I'm a bit biased. I also know of a couple more isaac's and I've never heard them being teased so I would go for it

123Dancewithme · 10/08/2020 09:44

It’s not Isaac that would be teased, it’s Isaac plus the surname!

Spidey66 · 10/08/2020 09:47

My least favourite from your list is Arthur, but all the rest are nice.

On the biblical theme, what about Caleb? I love that name.

BirdsDoIt · 10/08/2020 09:53

Not religious, no, but I do really like the classic Biblical names. Was thinking about Zachary but I like Isaac as a full name. Caleb is cool but tbh a bit too cool for us!

Am now regretting pointing out the potential for teasing as I think that’s slightly biased people’s answers!!

I have a 3 year old relative called Isaac. It's a really nice name and I think it's ridiculous people saying a dc will be teased with that name. My ds is 14 and knows a Beau and a Byron so your ds will be growing up with children with far more unusual names

Whatsyourflava · 10/08/2020 10:24

I love Isaac or Jacob
How about Peter or Matthew?

Grufallisfriends · 10/08/2020 11:11

My ds is 14 and knows a Beau and a Byron so your ds will be growing up with children with far more unusual names

But there's nothing tease worthy about Beau or Byron.

But there is with Isaac Wood. I wouldn't risk it.

GoshHashana · 10/08/2020 11:15

Isaac is gorgeous. If I have a DS that will be his name.

Fruityloopyloop · 10/08/2020 11:28

I love Isaac and think Isaac Alexander Wood sounds lovely. I also like Jacob and Alexander as first names if the I. Wood thing puts you off Isaac.

Kids at school don't usually have their initial and surname used much, more common would be Isaac W if there were two Isaacs. Kids tease / bully for all sorts of things so I wouldn't let that put you off if you love the name.
