Can I get your very honest opinions on bryony ?

Does it sound like “Brian”?
Being told “it sounds like a female version of Brian” is off putting !

I knew a girl with this name but it was pronounced Bree -onie, so it wasn't like Brian at all. Her nickname is Bry (Bree/Brie). I think it's a lovely name, and rarely heard, which is nice.

Topseyt · 03/08/2020 03:52

I like it. I don't consider it a version of Brian.

Ignore the nay sayers. If you like it then go for it.

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/08/2020 03:55

It's a lovely name and I have never associated it with Brian.

Goodoldfashionedploverboy · 03/08/2020 03:57

I had a lovely Canadian friend with this name at university. She was smart, confident, and funny. For that reason I’ve always felt very warmly towards the name.

Marahute · 03/08/2020 05:40

It's a lovely name. Beautiful.

daisypond · 03/08/2020 06:38

I like it. Would never associate it with Brian.

Dollywilde · 03/08/2020 06:43

Ooh, I’m due next week and that’s our #1 name if baby is a girl... I don’t see it mentioned on here a lot. Obviously I love it! Totally different sound to ‘Brian’ imo.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/08/2020 08:55

Gorgeous name

LoopyLlama · 03/08/2020 09:08

My son's girlfriend is called Briony. I think it's a very pretty name and made no association with Brian.

Frazzled2207 · 03/08/2020 09:12

Like it but prefer Briony.

frustrationcentral · 03/08/2020 09:22

Love it! One of my best friends at school had this name and I was very jealous ( I have a boring typical 1980's name HmmGrin). We called her Bree

PersonaNonGarter · 03/08/2020 09:24

I love this name. So pretty.

Brightyellow · 03/08/2020 09:27

I like it. I’ve only ever known one who would be about 30 now.

ILoveStickers · 03/08/2020 10:16

I like it, I know a very cute little girl with this name.

Bryony is better than Briony, for me.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/08/2020 10:17

I love it. Beautiful name.

brushandmop · 03/08/2020 10:43

Great name!

Reminds me (in a good way) of Kath and Kim when Kims friend Mona brings her baby 'Whiney Bryony' to her baby shower.

Mollythepoodle · 03/08/2020 12:39

It reminds me of brine therefore tuna, not Brian.

VimFuego101 · 03/08/2020 12:41

I never thought of the Brian connection until you mentioned it. It's a lovely name.

aprilfools19 · 03/08/2020 16:15

Thanks all for the positive feedback so far.

Bryony is in my top 5 but a couple of days ago a friend mentioned that she had one in her class in primary school and everyone called her Brian. So now she only ever associates it with Brian and I’m wondering how many others do! I hadn’t thought it previously but don’t want DD having to face “Brian the rest of her life haha

I love it! Haven't heard it for ages and have never associated it with Brian.

netflixismysidehustle · 03/08/2020 16:26

It reminds me of Brian if it's spelt Briony but the Bryony spelling doesn't remind of Brian as much.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 16:28

I like it, but I'd spell it Briony.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 16:28

Nothing wrong with Brian anyway...

eatsleepbreastfeedrepeat · 03/08/2020 18:15

I love Bryony.

We have a Briar and people have made the Brian comment but it is a beautiful name so you shouldn’t let it put you off. Whatever name you pick people will have something to say about it.

Ellmau · 03/08/2020 18:40

Your DD won't have any peers called Brian, though, so I doubt it will come up.
