Cornish Names

If I'm ever lucky enough to become a mummy (highly unlikely) my plan is to choose a Cornish name. Both my parents families go back to the 1700s in Cornwall. I was born in Cornwall myself and have a Cornish name, though grew up away from Cornwall.

Anyway...
What do you think of
Girls
Kerenza
Lamorna
Morwen
Morwenna
Rosen

Boys
Jago
Jowan
Kenwyn
Kitto
Piran
Perran
Ruan
Tremayne

I adore Kerenza and Jago - if I had any Cornish background I'd use these in a heartbeat.

stoneysongs · 31/07/2020 21:19

Love Morwenna but I would go with Petroc for a boy over any on your list I think.

finallychangedmyusername · 31/07/2020 21:21

Meant to add, I also love Austol, Cador and Santo for boys and for girls Elowen and Emblyn.

VerbenaGirl · 31/07/2020 21:24

Morwenna and Jago are my faves

Orphlids · 31/07/2020 21:29

Ooh, some of these are very exciting! I especially like Lamorna. I am currently trying to persuade DP to consider Loveday for our baby.

MarchionessOfMayhem · 31/07/2020 21:36

I love Rosen and Ruan. Or how about Lowen, Lerryn or Veryan or Caja for a girl?

Also, Jory for a boy?

Grumpbum123 · 31/07/2020 21:38

Morwenna
Elestren
Jago

I’m in Cornwall and don’t love a lot of your boys names simply because they read as place names to me. Also Tremayne very much a surname.

Piran the best, can’t beat a classic IMO.

I quite like Karenza from your girls list.
Can I suggest Veryan , Elowyn, Ysella.

Shayisgreat · 31/07/2020 22:09

I've never really heard of any of those names before. I like them. I think Kitto is especially cool. I like a pp suggestion of Ysella too.

hilariousnamehere · 31/07/2020 22:11

Kerenza is by far my favourite girls name, I've used it for one of my performance alter egos because I also have Cornish connections 🤩 have always rather liked Jago for a boy :)

KindKylie · 31/07/2020 22:12

I love Morwenna!

I know of a Zennor and love that too.

Not so keen on some of the boys names, Kitto and Jago are lovely though

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2020 22:13

@ThursdayLastWeek, not sure about some of your spellings.

TreesoftheField · 31/07/2020 22:13

I have seen Ysella spelt with a k as well.
Rozenwyn is lovely too and Tryphena.

gobananasgo · 31/07/2020 22:14

I like Jago ( if it's said Yay go ?)

Can't say any of the others seem like names. I suppose it depends on where you live. I live on the edge in
of London. And whilst anything goes and I do have traditional names from my DH's county they are proper names rather than ones people wouldn't know of where we live. There is a big difference between uncommon names and names no one has ever heard of. These days anything can be a name, but doesn't mean it should. People will say how lovely to be polite.

CornishTiger · 31/07/2020 22:20

Looks like our school class list

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2020 22:26

@gobananasgo, Jago is Jay-go.
I don't think any of those names are that unusual, other than Tremayne, as it's a surname.

The only downside to the names is that some are likely to be a bit trendy, or could lead to endless "Are you Cornish?" questions.

Motherofmonsters · 31/07/2020 22:31

Ive always liked Lowenna, it means Joy in Cornish.

Lots of the girls names are lovely, I'm not very keen on Cornish boy names

TenThousandSpoons · 31/07/2020 22:34

I love Jago.
Not too sure about the girls’ names.

Motherofmonsters · 31/07/2020 22:34

Kerenza in my favourite from your list

Littlefish · 31/07/2020 22:40

How about Loveday? Gorgeous name.

Jowan is lovely for a boy.

loutypips · 31/07/2020 22:41

I love Kerenza. It's beautiful.

ZolaGrey · 31/07/2020 23:04

Good lord please don't call a baby Kenwyn.

Flamingolingo · 31/07/2020 23:12

I’ve always liked Trystan for a boy, but Jowan is good too.

You could have Tegen for a girl (means pretty little thing), or Morgelyn. I also like Morvah, Senara,

Flamingolingo · 31/07/2020 23:14

And of course, Arthur

iguanabanana · 31/07/2020 23:15

It might be a good idea to wait till you get pregnant and even discuss it with your partner rather than strangers on the Internet.
However, on second thoughts, if you can't even manage this, perhaps motherhood isn't for you!
