Cornish Names

If I'm ever lucky enough to become a mummy (highly unlikely) my plan is to choose a Cornish name. Both my parents families go back to the 1700s in Cornwall. I was born in Cornwall myself and have a Cornish name, though grew up away from Cornwall.

Anyway...
What do you think of
Girls
Kerenza
Lamorna
Morwen
Morwenna
Rosen

Boys
Jago
Jowan
Kenwyn
Kitto
Piran
Perran
Ruan
Tremayne

Not sure why @iguanabanana is being so unkind. OP, I like Rosen for a girl and Jago and Ruan (especially Ruan!) for a boy. I hope you get to use one of these names one day Thanks

I really like them, except for Kenwyn and Tremayne. I have Cornish ancestors too.

@iguanabanana

It might be a good idea to wait till you get pregnant and even discuss it with your partner rather than strangers on the Internet.
However, on second thoughts, if you can't even manage this, perhaps motherhood isn't for you!

Aren’t you a ray of sunshine.

For me to have a baby, I need to go down the sperm donor route. There will never be a partner as I'm asexual. I also have pcos and rarely ovulate. So unless I can afford IVF I'm unlikely to ever be a mum. But I can dream cant I?

I love Cornish names, many are similar to Welsh names and there are some crossover names like Morwenna which I love.

I really like Elowen, Lowenna, Kerensa and Yseld, which is Cornish for Iseult/Isolde.

Jago, Jory, Jowan, Gryffyn and Massen are lovely too.
@ThursdayLastWeek, not sure about some of your spellings.
I see I misspelled Kerenza but other that I don’t see your point. I know children and places with those names spelled like that!

I actually had Kerenza but with the spelling Carenza on my short list when I was expecting. However I had a son.
I have always liked it since I first heard it on channel 4's Time Team. One of the archaeologists was called Carenza Lewis.

Elowyn is from Lord of the Rings. My comment was based on the welsh name threads often having weird spellings, prompted probably by the -wyn ending.

For example, Morwyn would not be an acceptable welsh name, but Morwen is fine, if somewhat dated.

Not particularly relevant, I appreciate. The names are often recognisable, with the Welsh equivalent obvious.

The LOTR character is Eowyn.

Which I actually think is nicer than Elowyn/Elowen but might indicate a super fan status.

Anyways. Now I’m confused why my spelling of Cornish names is being criticised with regard to Welsh spellings Hmm Grin

Welsh and Cornish are quite similar. I suppose I was curious as to which names I'd recognise.

I really wouldn't take it as a criticism.

Here are some 'names' I know - Kasei and Casei (both girls, pron Casey), TJay, Jayjay and Kadye (rhymes with Sadie). Those are the given names of real people.

I know a Kerenza, Jago and Morwenna. Morwenna and Jago are great names I think.

I love Kerensa with this spelling, I find the S a bit softer than the Z (I also prefer Elisabeth for Elizabeth for example). If I was Cornish it would have been on my list for DD.

I also quite like Tamar after the river.

Jago for a boy and Rosen for a girl

I like all the girls’ names except Lamorna but Rosen is my fave!

I'm in Cornwall and Tremayne is definitely a surname and a place name to me.

I like Jago for a boy, not keen on the others.

For girls, Rosen is my favourite. I know a couple of Elowens. One is 10/11 the other about 2. It's definitely becoming more popular. I also like Merryn, Lerryn, Sennen and Morvoren.

Can't say any of the others seem like names

They are Cornish names.

And whilst anything goes and I do have traditional names from my DH's county they are proper names

These are proper names.

There is a big difference between uncommon names and names no one has ever heard of

Weird, because I went to school with plenty of people with these names. Jago is quite common as a first and surname, as is Piran.

These days anything can be a name, but doesn't mean it should

would you say that to someone Welsh or Irish? Your cultural ignorance is showing.

Love Morwenna for a girl. (Also love Tegan, but only with a short 'e', so pronounced like Teggan.)
Love Jowan and Jory for boy, more so than Jago.

Went to school (in Cornwall) with a boy called Tremaine, so I actually do see it as a first name.

For heaven's sake, not Loveday. It sounds like a promotion on a porn site.

I like the name Merryn which I believe means joyful.

I like Ia, the church in St Ives is St Ia’s. Rosen is gorgeous.

I have an Eia as in the Cornish saint and dd2 middle name because I'm proper Cornish.
If I had another baby I love Ruan and Loveday. I have a holiday home at Ruan Minor too.

Jago has been appropriated by the middle classes like Arlo.

I went to school with a carenza I didn't like so much so that's out for me and also it's v popular down here.
