Ethel
Enid
Sheila
Carol

Archibald
Gary
Brian
Reginald

Any to add?

I like a lot of these names, and also know plenty of children with them. I know two Noras for instance.
Douglas is a classic Scottish name, many of these, eg Anne, are classic and timeless names.
I am bored of all the trying-too-hard-to-be-different names around and enjoy meeting tiny children with names from this thread.

My grandchild will probably be called karen, alan, tracey, tracey, brian, dermot, eamon and the such like

I know a child Maxine!
I did know a toddler Lesley, which was strange (in the noughties)

People name their kids after parents/grandparents so it’s more about the sentiment than the name, so wouldn’t be surprised if a lot come back around.

Kote · 26/07/2020 22:29

Gail
Gillian
Donna
Tracey
Denise

Can’t see Kevin coming back - as a child of the 80s I remember having 3 Kevin’s in my primary school class!

Wasn’t there a “campaign” (if you can call it that) to bring “Barry” back in popularity a few years ago?

Can’t see my grandmother’s name, Gertrude, making much of a comeback either!

GiraffesAreBeautiful · 26/07/2020 22:30

What a horrible discussion! Names are subjective and prone to celebrity endorsement. I don’t see anything wrong with any of these names.

Coromandine · 26/07/2020 22:31

If this topic had been discussed in the past by previous generations they'd probably have ruled out a lot of names that are popular. I remember the name Grace being really dated when i was a kid

So, here is a list of parents and grandparents and some of their siblings, on the English side:

Henry, Cyril, Ian, Vera, Joan, Gordon, Arthur, Bertha,
Oswald, Olive, Arthur.

I win 😂

A few people have said that Adolf is one of the few names that'd never come back. But it never went away. It was never a name used in the UK but it is still used in countries that have always had it. I'm in Sweden and I've a met a couple although they preferred to be called Dolf.

InTheWings · 26/07/2020 22:36

LOL, some of you are behind the times, with some of these suggestions, and they are already back in favour.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 26/07/2020 22:37

I know a baby Cedric.

Gem89415 · 26/07/2020 22:38

PuppyMonkey · 26/07/2020 22:39

I'm just baffled that somebody has said "Babette." Grin Confused

SengaStrawberry · 26/07/2020 22:40

Mind you my sister’s middle name is Harriet after our parental grandmother and we used to piss ourselves at that when she was young and it’s quite popular now.

MitziK · 26/07/2020 22:40

Already got a couple of Lesleys, a Shirley, a Carol, Pamela, Christina (nn Tina) and Barbara at work.

Ten or so years ago, I couldn’t have imagined anyone calling their babies Arthur or Ted or Audrey yet their popularity has increased. So I don’t honk there are many names that will never come back.

Interestingly, a lot of the above mentioned names were commonly given in the 70s and 80s. Their time probably just hasn’t come back yet. I quite like Susan, Leanne, Lisa and Kelly.
