Morgan or Michael

Thinking of names for our first DS. Torn between Morgan or Michael, they are quite different I know. Just to give you a picture of our fam, our kids are half Chinese and half English, two girls already and my DH has a unisex name (similar vein to Morgan) and it suits him. Any thoughts or opinions? Or even just associations with either name, positive or negative...If we went for Morgan we'd go for Mog as NN as don't like the connotations or Morg (morgue) Thanks x

Morgans I know are girls.

Peachbubble · 23/07/2020 07:01

I'd choose Morgan, mainly as I've never liked the name Michael, sorry.

Whatsyourflava · 23/07/2020 07:50

Morgan is cool and I like the nn Mog
Only Morgan's I know of are boys

DappledThings · 23/07/2020 08:12

Michael.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 23/07/2020 08:20

I was going to say Morgan until you said Mog as a nn which I don't like.

Michael is quite sweet.

AragornsManlyStubble · 23/07/2020 08:36

Never heard Mog as a NN but I love it.

Morgan is a family name for me and been on my list forever. Would definitely choose that.

Raimona · 23/07/2020 08:37

I’d assume Morgan was a girl. Michael is lovely.

micc · 23/07/2020 10:03

As much as I like a more 'out there' name. Michael I think I prefer here.
My OH is called Michael and he gets so many different nn he likes it.
It's a classic you cant go wrong with :)

Sojo88 · 23/07/2020 10:03

Much prefer Michael

emmathedilemma · 23/07/2020 10:03

I think Michael is quite old fashioned, a bit of a "middle aged man" sort of name (yes, i know they were babies once!).
I only know a male Morgan, nn Mo. Mog reminds of the books about the cat!

lukasiak · 23/07/2020 10:04

I have a Morgan Michael Grin

But boy Morgan can be hard because it's seen more of a girls name these days.

lukasiak · 23/07/2020 10:05

Also, never ever heard anybody call mine Mog. It's either Morg or M.

FizzyGreenWater · 23/07/2020 10:07

Sorry, can't stand Michael - it's THE middle-aged name. Mike is a bit depressing, Mikey is TERRIBLE.

Morgan - I know mainly male Morgans. It's ok!

How about Malcolm or Malachi?

bookmum08 · 23/07/2020 10:10

Mog is a slang word for cat and also the name of the cat in the popular series of picture books by Judith Kerr. I would say 99% of people with kids would instantly think of Judith Kerr's books (that's not terrible - they are excellent books).
Michael is better and you can shorten to Mike, Mikey, Mickey which is definitely better than being called Mog.

Morgan12 · 23/07/2020 10:11

Morgan is a great name 😊

But I think it is a girls name. I'd go with Michael, also a great name.

Itsarattrap · 23/07/2020 10:12

Michael

AragornsManlyStubble · 23/07/2020 10:12

Surely Morgana is the feminine version and Morgan the masculine?

bookmum08 · 23/07/2020 10:16

Although if you really like the idea of calling your kid Mog you can - just give the child a real name too.
My daughter was called Pumpkin for a couple of years. Girl across the road used to get called Pickle by her granny.

Esthermoo01 · 23/07/2020 10:31

I've just changed my username (I'm the OP just so you know)

Tbh I don't really like NN for either name so I would defo try and stick with Morgan or Michael in both cases but aware kids end up with all sorts of NN from school. I actually know a Mog weirdly but that's to do with his surname. I actually think of Meg and Mog more than Mog the cat as in Judit Kerr lol.

Interesting quite that a few people see it as a girl's name. I'm not too concerned with that as I generally do like those unisex names for boys like Taylor, Ashley, Rowan, etc. But Morgan is the only one of these type of names OH will agree on.

Interested to hear more opinions on these two. Don't like Malcolm or Malichi but open to further suggestions. Nothing beginning with J because of surname x

Pippilangstrumpfie · 23/07/2020 11:01

Morgan is a great unisex name. I'd choose that over Michael.

But pleas don't shorten to Morg - it sounds like morgue Shock!

Esthermoo01 · 23/07/2020 11:22

Yeah I know, o defo want to avoid morgue lol

RuthW · 23/07/2020 12:22

Michael. I hate the shortening of Morgan.

sel2223 · 23/07/2020 12:58

With the exception of Morgan Freeman, the only Morgan's I know IRL are girls.....never ever heard the nn Mog (or any shortened version for that matter).

Michael is just pretty blah....i put it in the same category as Phil, Alan, Colin, Pete, Dave....basically all my friends dads 😅
It would be better as a middle name

WildCherryBlossom · 23/07/2020 13:02

I much, much prefer Michael. I know a couple of female Morgans. Mog to me is a cat.

Michael is a lovely angel name for a boy which should be due a revival like Gabriel, Rafael and Daniel (the last never really went out of fashion)

FinnegansWhiskers · 23/07/2020 13:12

I like both Morgan and Michael. My DD’s ex boyfriend is Morgan. There is a little girl in my street called Morgan. It’s a name that suits both boys and girls.
