Is May too popular? I know it's used a lot as a middle name but do you know many little May's? I love it as a stand alone name.

It's overused as a middle name and it would be nice to see it used as a first name. It's simple and sweet, and definitely a standalone name. As a first name I don't think it's popular at all.

I don't know anyone with that name as a first name.

It's lovely on its own, just like Marie, Rose, Grace are (just other popular middle names that come to mind).

I don't know anybody with the first name May, but absolutely loads of children with it as a middle name. May as a first name is really lovely, I love it!

Maybe it's less popular than I thought? It seems low on the ONS charts but I wasn't sure if it was something that was rising in popularity or would just sound very plain and meh and blend in with many other similar names like Mila, Millie, Molly, Mia etc? It seems completely different to those names to me though?

I only know one May. It's defo not popular as a first name. It's lovely.

Every other little girl seems to have May tacked onto their first name with a hyphen these days. Ella-May, Rosie-May, Evie-May... the list is endless and each one is ghastly and tacky. However, May on its own is classy, beautiful, understated and fabulous in its simplicity. I think it’s a fabulous choice. I don’t know anyone named May.

I see it frequently as a double barrelled name at school, like Grace and Rose - but not on its own - I would go for it!

Mai pronounced ‘may’ is ghastly, agreed, but Mai is a legitimate Welsh name, pronounced ‘my’.

It’s a beautiful name as a first name, please use it!

It’s also a Chinese name but I definitely meant English or American people using Mai as a Yooonique spelling of May.

Yes my DH says it sounds Chinese to him so I hope he can see passed that. Love it
