Honestly I wouldn't use either. But if you love them use them.

Both lovely I would probably pick Melissa slightly less used I think and I'm not too keen on maddy .. although like madeleine...Melissa also has lovely meanings ..
Also like Meredith

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/07/2020 01:01

Melissa

Allmyeye · 08/07/2020 01:08

Like them both but they’ll get shortened so do you like Maddie and Mel? I don’t think Madeleine is overused. I really like Mel.

Buffyanne · 08/07/2020 03:14

Love Madeleine. Melissa is very 80s to me!

SneakyBlinder · 08/07/2020 03:40

My granddaughter is Maddilyn and she is the most gorgeous little miracle so I’m going for Madeleine (whichever way you’d spell it!)

Kote · 08/07/2020 03:47

Melissa

Pinnacular · 08/07/2020 03:48

Not a fan of Maddy as a nn so would go with Melissa

LotusClover · 08/07/2020 06:30

Overall I prefer Madeleine but it will most likely get shortened to Maddie/Maddy which is very overused. Melissa is much more unusual.

Aber9 · 08/07/2020 07:01

Madeleine, hands down,

peonypower · 08/07/2020 07:03

I have a Madeleine
Her friends call her Mads rather than Maddie (she is 13)
I still love the name.

doublethecuddlestwinmum · 08/07/2020 07:08

@peonypower I also have a Madeleine who gets Mads rather than Maddie! Primary school age Smile

daisypond · 08/07/2020 07:22

I like both, but Madeline is great.

scazlackabumdiyay · 08/07/2020 07:23

I have a Madeleine, aged 12, she is a Mads too! Although only to her friends. She insists on her full name from all the family!

Grufallosfriends · 08/07/2020 07:42

I would choose Melissa.

I don't like the English pronunciation of Madeleine with the emphasis on MAD 😡. Maddie, Mads and Mad are not nice imo.

Temple29 · 08/07/2020 07:44

Love Madeleine

WanderingTrolley1 · 08/07/2020 07:49

Melissa.

pilates · 08/07/2020 07:51

Madeleine
Melissa is awful, sorry

finallychangedmyusername · 08/07/2020 07:53

Both are lovely but I feel Madeleine is a bit more classic - Melissa feels quite 80s to me. You could also nickname Madeleine, Laney and Melissa, Lissy.

Onestepup · 08/07/2020 08:59

Melissa

itstrue · 08/07/2020 09:02

I have a Madeleine. Strangely no one shortens it!

Rainycloudyday · 08/07/2020 09:20

I like the name Madeleine but I just can’t separate it from Madeleine McCann sadly, that association ruins the name for me. Silly I know, but honestly true. And I agree with a PP that Melissa is very 80s and I just can’t imagine a baby now being called that. It’s almost like Neil or Gary for me in that sense! I quite like Meredith as an alternative suggestion?

spagbog5 · 08/07/2020 09:24

We have a Madeline and she's awesome so definitely that from me.
She is called Maddie by her friends and us sometimes but usually Madeline.
She loves her name but likes the shorter Maddie as she's 14 and apparently it's cooler .

Spied · 08/07/2020 09:24

Madeleine is beautiful.
Melissa is dated and not great.

Carandi · 08/07/2020 09:29

We have a Melissa in our extended family and I love it. She's been Mel since late teens though (her choice).

I like Madeleine but it would probably be mostly your family who call her that. Youngsters nowadays don't tend to call each other by full names so as soon as they're able it will be Mads/Maddy/Maddie etc.
