What do you think of the name Jasper?

We are expecting a second boy in November and considering names. I quite like the name Jasper but am not sure.

I associate it with being a name people often call their pets - anyone else agree?

Also, I think the gemstone association might be tough for a boy. Do you think people would associate the name primarily with the gemstone or as the English version of Caspar / Gaspar etc?

Husband says it sounds posh - do you agree?

I prefer Jasper to other versions of the name, eg Caspar, possibly because the -ar ending sounds a bit awkward in English to my ear.

@EmperorCovidula

If by ‘posh’ you mean lower middle class you’ve hit the nail on the head. I really like it though, sounds lovely but I couldn’t use it because it makes me think of Jasper Jones.
Wow, such a witty response! Classy.

The American jasper I know is a very posh kid, privately educated, parents met in Yale.
I have only ever known one doggy Jasper, he was a good dog. Most dogs I meet have names suitable for a mumsnet approved names thread.

Psychoseverywhere · 29/06/2020 18:55

Its my dogs name so I love it..... just for a dog though.

CeibaTree · 29/06/2020 20:20

It's a fab name. I wouldn't worry about it being a pets name. I know dogs called Simon, Colin and Felicity. As kind as you're not calling a child Rover it's not an issue!

Kenworthington · 29/06/2020 20:40

We have a jasper. He is 17 and ultra cool. It suits him .

ellenpartridge · 29/06/2020 20:43

I really like it! I only know one little Jasper and a couple of adults. No pets.

LST · 29/06/2020 20:48

I love Jasper OP. Though like you my cat is called Jasper. But that's only because I loved it so much and aren't having anymore DC

Lurchermom · 29/06/2020 20:48

I love Jasper, definitely on my list!

RuthW · 29/06/2020 21:11

Love it

J2356 · 29/06/2020 21:21

PP, what's your older son's name?

NCed here to say I have a Jasper! He's 5 and a few people said it was unusual when we picked it, but we have met 3 others (just passing connections, not at nursery or groups) - not too bad. Lots of people here saying it's popular but according to this it wasn't top 100 last year metro.co.uk/2019/12/04/olivia-muhammad-top-list-popular-baby-names-2019-11266090/
Maybe it depends where you live?

Ellmau · 01/07/2020 10:18

I think it's a lovely name.

There's the lake in Canada.

BabyLlamaZen · 01/07/2020 14:47

@J2356 this year it's number 8!

No, it isn’t. The most recent data is for 2018, when it was #89: names.darkgreener.com/#jasper. It is certainly on an upward trend but it has only been in the top 100 since 2016.

Zombiemum07 · 01/07/2020 15:24

I can’t decide if I like it or not. Personally, I think it could be a bit dull as feels a bit like a name I’d be told then forget straight away.

Tootletum · 01/07/2020 15:26

Sorry, no. It's a name I associate with gardeners. Not that there's anything wrong with that but he's a bloke in green overalls trimming the hedges of a stately home.

If you click through to Nameberry, the source of the list, there is a note to explain:

*Note: Nameberry’s popularity list is calculated based on which names attracted the most views of our website. For the official count of the Top Names in the US, calculated most recently for 2018, visit the Social Security website.'

The Nameberry stats only tell you what names are being looked at, not which ones are actually given to children. The only official source for these is the ONS in England and Wales (previous year's data published in Aug/Sept of the following year, so the 2019 data will be out fairly soon) and the NRS in Scotland, which publishes in March (so 2019 data is already available - Jasper was #171).

AfterSchoolWorry · 01/07/2020 15:44

It sounds nineties to me.

sneezetwice · 01/07/2020 15:52

I know 3 brothers with the surname Jasper and they're all just referred to as Jasper. It's cool

StandardLampski · 01/07/2020 15:55

I have a Jasper
We love it, it suits him, heard another in a park ( play park- not a dog Grin)
Don't think we know any personally... but it is generally well recieved.

Do know one Jasper dog.

Yes to the gemstone - but it was quite meaningful to give him a piece.

We are not posh

He does have a carrot fancy dress costume Grin
Hi all, as I've prob just outed myself Grin

SallyWD · 01/07/2020 16:23

It's a bit posh and a bit wet in my opinion. I can imagine a jasper being teased when he's a teenager.
