What do you think of the name Jasper?

We are expecting a second boy in November and considering names. I quite like the name Jasper but am not sure.

I associate it with being a name people often call their pets - anyone else agree?

Also, I think the gemstone association might be tough for a boy. Do you think people would associate the name primarily with the gemstone or as the English version of Caspar / Gaspar etc?

Husband says it sounds posh - do you agree?

I prefer Jasper to other versions of the name, eg Caspar, possibly because the -ar ending sounds a bit awkward in English to my ear.

I do like it although DH wouldn’t agree. I know a few children of various ages with it, so think it is gaining in popularity. I suspect a couple of decades ago I would have though it a slightly posher name but now I think it’s fairly generic across all groups. It’s definitely a very popular pet name though.

If you want me to be very specific, it makes me think of middle aged hippies who have given up the rat race and started a commune in rural Wales and are living off selling strange hand made jewellery to tourists, which they charge a fucking fortune for whilst claiming to be so anti materialistic maaaaan.

That does sound incredibly specific, Iwalk! Were you ripped off on your last visit to Wales? Grin

@Iwalkinmyclothing

It sounds rather posh to me. If you want me to be very specific, it makes me think of middle aged hippies who have given up the rat race and started a commune in rural Wales and are living off selling strange hand made jewellery to tourists, which they charge a fucking fortune for whilst claiming to be so anti materialistic maaaaan.

That said, I do like it :)

:):) love this response!

Lovely, I really like it.

peekaboob · 29/06/2020 11:32

@ZoyaTheDestroyer I have a Jasper, who we sometimes call Waspi when he's in a grumpGrin

eggandonion · 29/06/2020 11:35

I know an American Jasper who is currently a challenging teenager to his parents, but lovely to everyone else. I think it's a great name.
His brothers are Liam and Kevin. I wonder if Kevin will be a difficult teenager.

Guiltyfeminist1 · 29/06/2020 11:36

I like it a lot and it was on my personal list for this baby. Suggested it to be husband who immediately vetoed it because people would just think of 'Jasper Carrott' meaning the old English comedian. My husband clearly has his finger on the pulse of modern life eye roll. Jasper is a lovely lovely name!

Thanks for all your responses.

@Iwalkinmyclothing didn't mean to reply to your message 3 times, didn't realise my replies were on pg 2!!

Hahah no worries! I'm glad you didn't just think I was a steaming weirdo and get cross I'd posted like that (I think my coffee kicked in just as I read your post).

It really is a nice name, Jasper :)

LotusClover · 29/06/2020 11:47

I don't like it, and yes I do think of it as a name for a pet. But I seem to be in the minority so go for it if you love it.

DramaAlpaca · 29/06/2020 11:48

I like it a lot. The gemstone is my first thought, but it's masculine all the same.

FiddleFigs · 29/06/2020 11:52

My dog is a Jasper. There are 2 other Jasper dogs in the area. Also it seems quite popular for cats.

Lovely name, but never actually met a human Jasper!

BabyLlamaZen · 29/06/2020 11:59

Love it, but it's now really popular so losing it's meaning. No longer sounds nice when you hear lots of kids with it.

captainraymondholt · 29/06/2020 12:03

I love it.

123Dancewithme · 29/06/2020 15:28

I like it. I do think of the gemstone but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. My DH vetoed it because of Jasper Carrott!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/06/2020 15:45

I love the name Jasper, and it would have been top of my list, except, yep we had a dog called Jasper.

To me it's not posh, it's more of a Cornish thing.

Whatsyourflava · 29/06/2020 16:20

I adore the name Jasper. Probably my favourite boy name. I never even considered it as a pet name. My husband said "no" to the name as he thought it was a bit strange a few years ago .....but he loves the name now too - typical ! Too late for me to use it now sadly but I strongly encourage you to use!
It sounds really masculine but I love that it's a gem stone. It's got more popular but I've not met one yet, so it's not everywhere.

Theforest · 29/06/2020 16:22

It was the name for a wasp when I was a kid

Don't love it.

HeeeeyDuggee · 29/06/2020 16:23

I think it’s a lovely name

I associate it with the gem stone and Jasper Tudor who was the uncle of Henry VII never heard it used as a Pets name

Also wouldn’t confuse it was Casper as they’re both names in their own right not versions of the same name Smile

Hippofrog · 29/06/2020 16:25

It makes me think of Jasper Tudor (but I’m a sad history fan)

Panicmode1 · 29/06/2020 16:30

I love it and we called our 4th Jasper for about a week. But somehow it didn't suit him so we changed it. I have a Rufus too, which people told me is also a dog name.... I've only met one so far. If you love it, use it!

cliffdiver · 29/06/2020 16:32

Dog name.

KetoWinnie · 29/06/2020 16:33

Bit sharp for a baby.
Great name for a dog.

KetoWinnie · 29/06/2020 16:34

I love Rufus. But it sounds friendlier.

EmperorCovidula · 29/06/2020 16:34

If by ‘posh’ you mean lower middle class you’ve hit the nail on the head. I really like it though, sounds lovely but I couldn’t use it because it makes me think of Jasper Jones.
