We went back to the drawing board yesterday to see if we could find any similar names to Ariella, as a backup option in case we go off Ariella...
we found a Hebrew name, Eliana, what do you think of this name?
Do you prefer Eliana or Ariella? I still prefer Ariella because I think it looks prettier and sounds stronger... What are your thoughts?

I think Ariella is too close to areola.

Eliana is much better imo.

elfran · 14/06/2020 19:12

Neither are to my style (I tend to veer away from "pretty"), but I prefer Eliana. I think the -ana ending feels stronger than -ella, which is just a bit too princessy, not to mention popular, for me.

What nicknames are you thinking for each? Perhaps that would help decide it?

Buckingham1988 · 14/06/2020 19:22

Eliana by far my favourite. I would think it may be shortened to eli/Ellie or Ann/Anna would you be happy with these nicknames?

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 14/06/2020 19:25

Eliana.

Ariella is waaaaay to flouncy.

watercolourart12 · 14/06/2020 19:26

For nicknames we were thinking,
Ariella: Aria, Ella, Ria, Ayla (pronounced Eye-la)
Eliana: Ella or Anna...

I’m aware that Ellie/ Ella is really common... however it isn’t that common in our culture, we have a Turkish, Persian & English background...
Ariana is quite common, a family friend’s daughter has been named Ariana so we ruled this name out even though it has been on our list for a while.

@Buckingham1988 I wouldn’t mind these nicknames, I guess we will let the nickname form naturally

Eliana is better.

Kittymitty38 · 14/06/2020 20:06

Eliana is beautiful. But she will be Ellie xx

Doubtingmustafa · 14/06/2020 20:24

I prefer Ariella.

I have an Eliana and she often gets complimented on her name. Definitely my preference of the two Smile

Quercusrobur · 14/06/2020 21:43

I know an Eliana, she’s a cutie! I have also met an Aniella, if you’re looking for similar to Ariella - it is the Italian word for angel.

CaffiSaliMali · 14/06/2020 21:50

I prefer Eliana. To me it sounds the stronger of the two, I think because of the ana ending. It also reminds me of Elia, which I've always thought was a beautiful name and a possible nickname for Eliana (really hoping George RR Martin didn't make Elia up for Game of Thrones now).

Ariella is a bit frilly for my taste, but is a fine name, and has plenty of nickname potential.

Ella is a nice nickname for either. I like Ari as a nickname for Ariella. Aria is nice too.

whatausername · 14/06/2020 22:14

Eliana. Ariella isn't very pretty sounding tbh.

watercolourart12 · 14/06/2020 22:45

I’m definitely seeing a preference towards Eliana in the comments! @whatausername Any reason why you think Ariella doesn’t sound as pretty as Eliana? Is it the ‘Ari’ sound at the beginning? I know Ariel is a male name in Hebrew, which makes me worried that it’s got quite a masculine sound at the beginning of the name...

Aurelia
Aurelie
Alina

Are all similar to Ariella. I don’t think the Ari is masculine... would you pronounce it as ari to time with Harry or is it ahree to time with Harley? I think Eliana is nice, perhaps more so than ariella

whattodo2019 · 14/06/2020 23:00

Neither. So sorry. I do love Alina and Aurelia though

123Dancewithme · 14/06/2020 23:00

I prefer Ariella but it looks like I’m in the minority!

Lotsalotsagiggles · 14/06/2020 23:01

What about simplify it and use arrielle?

Boireannachlaidir · 14/06/2020 23:03

That's kind of how nicknames happen, you can't really plan them in advance. They tend to form organically once you get to know someone.

Ariella would likely be shortened to Ari. Which sounds like someone dropping the 'h' in Harry to me.

Starbuggy · 14/06/2020 23:07

Eliana

RoseMartha · 14/06/2020 23:08

Elianna

watercolourart12 · 15/06/2020 00:38

I like Alina as well! @Boireannachlaidir I agree! I don’t like Ari as a nickname...
The majority on mumsnet don’t like Ariella it seems... :( Ahh that’s a shame. I don’t feel so confident about Ariella anymore despite really liking it. Maybe Eliana or Alina are safer options?
