Contemplating the name Olive for our daughter. Surname is Ward.

DH says that out loud it sounds like you're saying "all aboard!" Is this a dealbreaker or thinking too much into it?!

Over thinking it.
It’s fine.

Covidkate · 04/06/2020 20:30

It is a little bit all aboard. What about olivia?

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2020 20:41

Not keen on Olive, although I love the oily little fruit.
Olivia goes better with the surname but Olivia is so over-used.

Pick a name with stronger consonant sounds. What other names do you like?

otterbaby · 04/06/2020 20:44

Unfortunately we don't like Olivia either! Also considering Violet which is probably tied for number 1...and eliminates any nautical references.

NuffSaidSam · 04/06/2020 21:15

I love Olive.

Olive Ward is fine and not too nautical.

Violet Ward flows better, but Violet is overly popular and not as nice as Olive imo.

backseatcookers · 04/06/2020 21:27

Viola? Violet is lovely too.

FWIW I wouldn't ever make the all aboard connection.

Blursula · 04/06/2020 21:55

I think Olive Ward is fine and doesn’t sound at all like all aboard!

However, Violet makes me think of ‘violent’, and Violent Ward makes me think of... well, that.

packetandtripe · 04/06/2020 22:29

no, would never have made that connection. Is it his way of saying he doesn't like it? Olive Ward is a strong definite name, nothing wrong with it.

PlantPotting · 04/06/2020 22:39

Violet and Olive are 2 of my very favourites names. Love them so much. Both work fine with surname

Peabodymixi · 04/06/2020 22:42

I hate olive sorry. I do also agree with your DH though it made me chuckle! I wouldn’t have come up with that but I do see what he means

Mimca · 04/06/2020 22:58

I hear overboard - sorry.

Violet is beautiful. I want to like Olive but the 'Ol' of Olive doesn't sound pleasant to my ears.

Iris Ward?

PastaBolognaise · 04/06/2020 23:00

Violet ward sounds like the psychiatric ward for violent people. Or a purple wart. Sorry!

Olive Ward is much much better.

123Dancewithme · 04/06/2020 23:50

Yes, all aboard or au revoir.

Violet Ward does sound like the name of a ward in a hospital. Olive does a bit too. Maybe a name that’s not a colour would be better.

Aclh13 · 04/06/2020 23:57

You rarely call someone by their full name just go with it

ilovepixie · 04/06/2020 23:58

Olive makes me think of Olive from on the buses!

Letthemysterybe · 05/06/2020 00:11

If I sort of mumble “Olive Ward” it sounds like “Olive oil”

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/06/2020 00:14

Life might be easier if you changed your surname

alexdgr8 · 05/06/2020 00:19

olive sounds like a rather old-fashioned name to me.
i can see what people are saying about names of colours/ flowers, any names that could also be a noun really, in front of ward can sound like a hospital.
think a name with a strong consonant sound at the end goes better with ward. maybe a longer given name since the surname is short.

Aclh13 · 05/06/2020 02:39

@ilovepixie omg yes I agree 😂😂😳

Edenember · 05/06/2020 02:50

I can kinda see what he’s saying now that’s it’s been said, but I’m not sure I would’ve made that association on my own. Violet ward however does instantly make me think violent ward as others have said. If they are names you love, could the baby perhaps have both your maiden surname and ward, to give you more options? If not, I definitely think Olive Ward works best of your options, and I don’t think what your husband pointed out will be a problem generally.

Mumma4262 · 05/06/2020 06:29

Olive and Violet are 2 of my favourite names! We are calling our daughter Violet.

I do agree with PP’s that Olive goes better with your surname than Violet though.

AlisonLew15 · 05/06/2020 08:58

@otterbaby my grandmothers name was Olive and I want it as a middle name if I ever have a little girl.

GwenSaturn · 05/06/2020 09:04

Olive Ward sounds like All Aboard to my ear too and Violet Ward sounds like a violent facility! Sorry! Confused

Any other names on the table?

ILoveStickers · 05/06/2020 09:20

Colours + Ward sound a bit like hospital wards, as others have said.

You seem to like V sounds?

Victoria
Viola
Eve
Ava
Sylvia
Vanessa
Verity
Ivy
Maeve
Niamh
Siobhan

MittensTheSerpent · 05/06/2020 09:23

Olive Ward sounds like a department in a low security prison!
