Contemplating the name Olive for our daughter. Surname is Ward.

DH says that out loud it sounds like you're saying "all aboard!" Is this a dealbreaker or thinking too much into it?!

Changing our surname is off the table unfortunately 😂 DH does actually like Olive, but I think once he made the connection to All Aboard he can't get it out of his head!

We prefer old fashioned names - I like names that make you wonder if it's a baby or an 80 year old 😬

Thanks for the opinions, will keep brainstorming...

Was considering Eloise for a middle name, maybe that would be better as a first?

I love Olive, always makes me think of little miss sunshine 😍.
Much prefer Olive to Violet.
I was going to suggest Maud haha Maud Ward is too much rhyme.

DoctorBambino · 05/06/2020 10:42

I wouldn't have noticed it but now you've pointed it out I would think it every time I heard it. Which I guess will be the same for you and DH. I love Eloise, much nice than Olive in my opinion.

How about:

Valerie Ward
Vivian Ward
Verity Ward
Vera Ward
Iris Ward
Irene Ward
Agnes Ward
Dorothy Ward
Mabel Ward
Elspeth Ward

IVflytrap · 05/06/2020 11:32

Forgot one:

Mavis Ward

(I have a soft spot for the name Mavis, I think because so many people dislike it Grin)

LayTheTableMabel · 05/06/2020 11:48

Add a middle name?

doughnutmuffin · 05/06/2020 12:14

I don't think Olive or Violet flow with Ward, I like Eloise and it works well

MikeUniformMike · 05/06/2020 13:32

Flower + Ward sounds like a hospital ward.

Contrary to pp, most people are known as Firstname Surname, adding a middle name won't really help.

backseatcookers · 05/06/2020 13:48

Holly Ward
Viola Ward
Joanie Ward
Dorothy Ward (Dot / Dotty nn)
Florence Ward (Flo / Flossie nn)
Ruby Ward
Lily Ward
Edie Ward
Elsie Ward (I love that one!)
Evelyn Ward (Evie nn)

Any of those?

FenellaMaxwell · 05/06/2020 13:51

How about
Ethel
Margot
Vera
Constance
Betty
Winifred
Cora
Myrtle

otterbaby · 05/06/2020 13:55

Florence is a front runner as well, just not sure if it's a bit too fussy...

Love Elsie and was the name of my great-grandmother, too popular though?

Also like Mabel but DH doesn't agree.

We will be having a middle name but she won't be referred to as first name-middle name so probably won't help.

So difficult!

Stick with Olive, I love it! You really don’t hear it all that often but I think it has such character. Florence, Elsie, Mabel are still lovely but much more popular.

Violet is also beautiful but I’d be swayed more towards Olive

LynetteScavo · 05/06/2020 14:07

I'm going to be harsh here. It sounds like a ward in my local hospital Oak Ward, Ash Ward, Olive Ward (there isn't actually an olive ward as far as I know). Apart from that it's lovely and not really like all aboard.

doughnutmuffin · 05/06/2020 14:08

Florence and Elsie are lovely too

Blingismything · 05/06/2020 14:09

I love it.

Olive Ivy

Dollywilde · 05/06/2020 14:14

I’ll lend you my granny’s name if you like - Odette. Gives you the ‘O’ first name, goes nicely with Ward, has old fashioned credentials. I’d have used it myself if we didn’t have a lot of ‘t’s in our surname that meant the full version jars a bit.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 05/06/2020 14:15

Love Florence and Elsie. Less keen on Olive and Violet.

AnnaSW1 · 05/06/2020 14:18

It does make me think all aboard

pinktaxi · 05/06/2020 14:27

It does sound like 'all aboard' to me!

I would avoid it tbh

JoeExoticsPrinceAlbert · 05/06/2020 14:33

Winnifred
Gwendolyn
Ruth
Iris
Edith
Hazel
Nora
Wendy
Elspeth
Heidi
Jemima
Tabitha
Josephine
Heather

Olive is lovely but I do think it sounds a bit like all aboard with your last name, sorry!

ILoveStickers · 05/06/2020 16:17

Florence, Elsie and Eloise are all nice. I would pick Eloise, I think.

footprintsintheslow · 05/06/2020 18:55

I love the name Olive

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 05/06/2020 19:32

It's a great name. Smile

Buzz22 · 06/06/2020 17:54

I love Olive. I don't think of 'all aboard' even after saying it to myself a few times. If you love it...go for it! But Eloise is also very beautiful and sounds great with your surname.
