Variation of Lily?

So we love the name Lily and even though it's getting quite popular we still really like it. Yesterday going through nameberry for inspiration this name came up on a completely unrelated thread to the name Lily.

Lilium

What do you think? Is it a realistic alternative? I do like the -um bit quite a lot even though I can't explain why

Thanks xxx

Welsh alternatives:
Lilwen
Liliwen
Lila (lee-la)

Lalala205 · 05/06/2020 04:19

Also if you like floral names I'd consider; Iris, Fern, Saffron, Heather (very 80s but maybe due a comeback?), Ivy, Camellia (bit of a wild card!).

bettybeans · 05/06/2020 04:26

Thank god the Welsh are here. They're honestly the only folks that can always fix you up with a beautiful name. Said the Scot 😄

Aclh13 · 05/06/2020 04:37

@bettybeans not sure what you haven't learnt from this week of equality? That comment is fairly offensive to other cultures and countries regardless of you being 'a scot'

footprintsintheslow · 05/06/2020 05:09

@Aclh13 are you being serious?

walkingchuckydoll · 05/06/2020 05:37

Livia?

Bl3ss3dm0m · 05/06/2020 06:45

Variegated Lily
Valley (of the)
Lilliput
Lily Marlene
Sorry, can't think of anymore!
Wink

We already have a close family members named Lilian and also a Lilia so most other options have been taken!

Then surely your number one priority would be to choose something completely different, i.e. something that doesn't have "Lily" in it? It seems nonsensical to have a Lilian, Lilia and Lilium in the same family. Besides, Lilium itself is pretty absurd. Go for something else.

IndiaMay · 05/06/2020 17:32

I think Lily is quite over done but Lilyana is nice (I cant remember if that's how you spell it, there was one in neighbours for a while - pronounce Lily - yana)

SleepingStandingUp · 05/06/2020 17:34

Lillium illium lithium no.

Lilith?
Lilyana?

heartonastring · 05/06/2020 17:35

Oh lillibette is lovely!!

daisypond · 05/06/2020 17:36

I do like Lily, but the ones I know are in their 20s, so it seems very behind the times to me now. I would have said Lilias, but if you’ve got family called Lilian or Lilia, maybe something else.

Susannah - means Lily.
Or
Millie, Tillie, Lola, Callie, Sally, Molly, Polly, etc

HBGKC · 05/06/2020 17:40

My dd is Elisabeth, and she gets called Lily more often than her full name.

MikeUniformMike · 05/06/2020 19:55

Susanna

Bertyb7 · 05/06/2020 19:57

Lilia is beautiful

MikeUniformMike · 05/06/2020 20:02

Tesco own brand tampons used to be called Lilia.

CraftyGardener · 05/06/2020 23:32

Millicent. Could be milllie or Lilly

mamablondie2 · 06/06/2020 08:56

Lilian is SO much nicer!

3LittleMonkeyz · 06/06/2020 09:07

Sounds like something from the periodic table.

I think if you have that many names that are similar to Lily close to you you should look for something else.

MikeUniformMike · 06/06/2020 12:20

Lilwen
Liliwen

These are made up names and IMO are awful. Lili is ok but Lilwen and Liliwen are not. Liliwen would be pronounced Li-LI-wen not Lily-wen

flamingochill · 06/06/2020 12:30

Sounds like a Harry Potter spell or something from the periodic table so a big no from me.

flamingochill · 06/06/2020 12:32

Leela is sometimes spelt Lila (although some would pronounce it like lilac without the c )

footprintsintheslow · 06/06/2020 12:45

@MikeUniformMike I'm afraid you must've misread my post. I said these were Welsh names. Sorry if that doesn't fit with your narrow view of real language.

MikeUniformMike · 06/06/2020 13:07

They are made up.
Liliwen doesn't even work because of how Welsh works.

Whether or not someone is actually called the name doesn't really make it a name. Apple was probably not a girl's name until someone called their daughter it. Is Apple a girl's name?

If I called a DD Philwen would that make Philwen a name?
Philipwen wouldn't work because it would be pronounced PhiLIPwen.

How about Lilette?

3LittleMonkeyz · 06/06/2020 13:10

It's not made up though, just Welsh
