How would you pronounce Lotte?

Hi,
Basically I think I’ve decided on a name, Lottie. My only problem is that people have commented that it’s a nickname and not a ‘real name’ Ive come across the spelling Lotte which I feel looks fore like a ‘whole’ name, but my bf says it is pronounced differently. What do you think? How would you pronounce Lotte?

I'd guess at Lot

whattodo2019 · 01/06/2020 22:50

My goddaughter is Lottie. She was Christened Lottie and it isn't short for Charlotte.

user1493494961 · 01/06/2020 22:51

Charlotte, shortened to Lottie, it gives her options when she's older. Always nice to have options.

Toptotoeunicolour · 01/06/2020 22:55

Lott-uh, German style.
Carlotta as a full name would be clearer, then you can shorten to Lottie.
Lovely name, whichever way.

BlackCatsRule88 · 01/06/2020 22:56

I’d pronounce it Lot. Lottie and Hattie are both lovely names.

TimeWastingButFun · 01/06/2020 22:56

I've only ever seen that name written down and assumed it was pronounced 'Lot' as no 'I'. I think any name that requires explanation is really tedious for the kid - imagine the thousands of times they'll have to explain... if it's pronounced Lottie then why not call her Lottie? 🤷‍♀️ (if it's Lott-a) it sounds a bit too much like lotto imo. By the way I think Charlotte or Lottie are really pretty names.

Lavenderblues · 02/06/2020 06:54

Lott is the French pronunciation

Lott-eh is the German pronunciation

There doesn't seem to be an English one?

Crystal87 · 02/06/2020 07:01

I'd just call her Lottie.

GlamGiraffe · 02/06/2020 07:20

Lott with a softer uh
LÖTT-uh
Not quite lotta but between that and lott-uh

SimpleKindofLife · 02/06/2020 07:22

I'd pronounce it as Lot. But I wouldn't be sure. How would you say it, OP?

If lot-ee, I'd go for the Lottie or Lotty spelling as she'll have a lifetime of confusion otherwise.

And I think it's fine as a whole name. My dc has a nn as his full name. Nobody has ever questioned it. If you like it, go for it.

SpillTheTeaa · 02/06/2020 07:32

I would pronounce the same as Lottie

Lavenderblues · 02/06/2020 07:34

But by that logic you'd pronounce Charlotte as Charlottie Grin

YinMnBlue · 02/06/2020 07:41

Lotta.

The Lotte in our family (German born) is Lotta.

I love Hattie and Hettie.

Socksontheradiatoragain · 02/06/2020 08:30

I like Hattie as well. It sounds fun!

moldycashew · 02/06/2020 08:32

Law-tay. Like latte but with an o

SeasonFinale · 02/06/2020 08:39

Hattie is short for Harriet so would you use just Hattie or Harriet. If just Hattie then you might just as well use just Lottie.

helia · 02/06/2020 08:45

Lott-ah.

Have you considered Ottilie? It has similar sounds to Lottie and Hattie so thought I'd mention it.

FloreanFortescue · 02/06/2020 08:47

I taught a Lotte, lovely name!

It's like bitte in German. Lott-e.

tiredanddangerous · 02/06/2020 08:49

Lotte would be Lott-uh. I like Lottie but I don’t like shortened versions of names as the actual name. They’re very cute on young dc but too cute for a middle aged woman imo.

Herja · 02/06/2020 08:52

It IS my name, though not spelt either way. I am regularly called lotta/lott-uh anyway, because of the demographic of the area I live in - it's heavily Eastern European and that's the abbreviation they're used to. I actually quite like it and respond to it as well as my name now. Just spell it Lottie, it's a well known, sensible spelling of the name (it's how EVERYONE spells my awkwardly spelt name). Lotte will cause more confusion, not less.

AwwDontGo · 02/06/2020 09:16

I'd call her Lottie. It's nice.

SimpleKindofLife · 02/06/2020 09:22

@helia Ottilie is a great idea!

Ninkanink · 02/06/2020 09:27

Yes it’s exactly like bitte in German.

Lottie is much prettier, plus everyone will know how to pronounce it.

Lavenderblues · 02/06/2020 09:43

Unless you're French. Then it's Lott. Like the fish!

Ninkanink · 02/06/2020 09:45

I like it more pronounced the French way (it sounds softer).

Still, Lottie is infinitely nicer.
