Hi,
Basically I think I’ve decided on a name, Lottie. My only problem is that people have commented that it’s a nickname and not a ‘real name’ Ive come across the spelling Lotte which I feel looks fore like a ‘whole’ name, but my bf says it is pronounced differently. What do you think? How would you pronounce Lotte?

Lottie, Lettie, Hetty and (to a lesser extent 👒) Hattie are all great.

InterestingIris · 01/06/2020 20:59

I would pronounce as Lot-ee still, but I think the spelling of Lottie is prettier than Lotte. You’d gets lots of ‘lot’ ‘lotta’ ‘loat’ type pronunciations with Lotte I think.

I like Lottie or Hattie...is Hattie for Harriet?

FoolsAssassin · 01/06/2020 21:00

I would pronounce it Lott-uh.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 01/06/2020 21:02

I know a Lotte, and she pronounces it 'Lottie'.

Hattie and Lottie/Lotte are both great names.

QuantamBaby · 01/06/2020 21:03

I would pronounce it Lott-uh which isn't as pretty as Lottie (IMHO)

I'd go for Charlotte and call her Lottie - your friend will be flattered :)

daisypond · 01/06/2020 21:07

Just call her Charlotte. Lottie for short. Lotte is more like Lott-uh. Lottie isn’t a real name to me, and neither is Hattie. Charlotte or Harriet is fine.

viques · 01/06/2020 21:16

If you don't want her to be Charlotte then what about Carlotta.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/06/2020 21:20

Lott - uh

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/06/2020 21:21

No one uses my full name, I’ve always been the shorter version. Honestly call her Charlotte and call her Lotte- your friend won’t tKe offence will she?!

Hattie is horrible Imo- old fashioned in an untrendy way

Pipandmum · 01/06/2020 21:23

Name your kid what you want. Two of my kids have names that are considered nicknames (like Bob is for Robert) but are their actual names. Once or twice someone has called my daughter by the longer name (to which she has not responded) but usually they just call her by her name. My son has been asked what his name is short fjr and he just says it's his name, not short for anything.
I'd pronounce it Lot-ee. By niece is Charlotte by the way and no one has ever called her Lotte, the more common nickname where she lives would be Charlie. Her mother calls her Char.

AnnaMagnani · 01/06/2020 21:24

Nobody, nobody will be able to pronounce it and she will be known as Lot.

You may be able to get away with it at school where people learn names and you have a constant group of people but in adult life it will be hopeless.

Don't do it if you aren't Scandinavian. At least then you can claim the heritage.

Starbuggy · 01/06/2020 21:30

Lott-uh

I love Lottie short for Charlotte. Hattie short for Harriet is cute but not keen on it as a stand-alone name, too cutesy

Ughmaybenot · 01/06/2020 21:32

Lot-uh. It’s Dutch isn’t it?
Charlotte, nn lottie is our number one girls name, but I also love Harriet, nn Hattie. I would want the ‘proper’ versions on the BC tho.

occa · 01/06/2020 21:32

Sort of halfway between Lot-UH and Lot-ER with a softer sound at the end than either of those.

It's pretty and not hard to pronounce. I've known a few of them (Scandinavian and Dutch) and all pronounced it this way.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 01/06/2020 21:32

Hattie - always conjures images of Hattie Jacques and Carry On films, but then I am rather old...

sawollya · 01/06/2020 21:33

Lotta

Rubyred24 · 01/06/2020 21:42

Lot

csam · 01/06/2020 21:49

What about Elliot shortened to lottie?

TheWaspsAreEverywhere · 01/06/2020 21:50

My youngest is Charlotte. We used to call her Lottie, until her elder sister pointed out that Lottie is an anagram of Toilet. She was only three at the time, but has refused to be called Lottie since.

Lavenderblues · 01/06/2020 22:04

Lottie an anagram of toilet! Would never have realised that.

Lotte is pronounced Lott-eh. The second syllable is like a short uh sound but more like eh.

ThunderR0ad78 · 01/06/2020 22:17

If you call her Lottie, IMO most people will assume her name is Charlotte anyway. I know 4 Lotte's they are all Charlotte on birth cert. If you don't use Charlotte as her day to day name, it won't be like she has the same name as your friend.

Scruffyoak · 01/06/2020 22:19

My friend is lotte prn lott but gets called lottie or lot which drives her mad.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 01/06/2020 22:21

I'd pronounce it Lottie, and I think that is the spelling to use. Much prefer it over Hattie (which is an old lady name, not in a good way).

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 01/06/2020 22:28

Could you spell it lotty?

sweetnosugar · 01/06/2020 22:39

Just go with Lottie as your baby’s name it’s fine! Loads of people have abbreviated/nn’s as their full names now a day’s!
In fact I know a sweet little girl, her name is Lottie on the birth certificate.
