I remember hearing this name when I was learning French and thinking I’ve found my favourite ever name... thought it was beautiful... then realised it’s pretty much orally in English so a no go. Has anyone else had the wind similarly knocked clean out of their sails by falling head over heels in love with a name only to have the crushing realisation it actually doesn’t work at all.

Use Aurelia instead?

I’m not keen on Aurelia, and this was years ago btw. My taste has changed a lot since then and I’ve got a million other girls names I absolutely love... was more wondering if anyone’s had similar experiences with loving something only to realise it’s a total no go.

I liked Amaris when I saw it written down. Then I practised saying it in sentences and realised it often came out as “amorous”.

I loved Soraya. Beautiful name. I emailed it to a friend who replied “sounds like Psoriasis”. That was the end of that.

@Cattenberg haha. Sometimes it’s really helpful to have associations pointed out as others may think of something you haven’t... however it feels a bit of a mean thing to do if someone has really struggled to find a name they and their partner agree on, only to have it shot down in one fell swoop. You have to consider these things though, imagine someone pointing it out after the baby is named.

Years and years ago, my cousin was a HUGE fan of the page 3 model Sian Adey-Jones (we are not Welsh and this was in the late 70s so pre-internet so she always called her Si-ann). When she had her little girl she very proudly announced the name...Sian (Si-Ann...not Sh-arn ) Nobody in industrial 70s Manchester batted an eye of course and thought it very 'yoonique'. It was years later that we all realised that this poor child would spend a lifetime explaining that she was Si-ann spelt Sian! So yeah..Sian 🤷‍♀️

She’s now almost 40 and does actually now call herself Ann...she is a solicitor 😂 Within the family it is a fond joke...good job we have a sense of humour 🤷‍♀️😀

My grandmother was devastated to learn that her favourite name, Penelope, was not pronounced Penny-lope.

I liked Jethro once but now all I hear is death row.

@35andThriving that’s never occurred to me until you’ve just said it and I usually notice things like that... yeah me too now 😂 . I love that name but I’d definitely be vetoed anyway so no loss 😂

I knew someone that thought Caleb was pronounced Celeb and were actually going to use it 😂

Aurelie is too close to Orally.
I know a story about the aforementioned Page 3 person. Wasn't highly thought of locally.

Oh and my one...Calliope...I read this name in a book when I was about 12...in my head, as I was reading, the name was Cally O pee...emphasis on the 'O'...obviously 🤷‍♀️ I was 12! I thought this was THE most beautiful name ever 🥰

I never gave it another thought until Grey's Anatomy comes along 30 years later 😂 Bugger me! Call-I-opee...emphasis on the 'I' 😂. Still think it's a beautiful name 💓

I love the name Giselle but it was pointed out to me that Gis (Jiz) wouldn't be the nicest nickname!

We have an Aurelie. No one has pronounced it "orally", the sound is O as in orange - O-re-lie. We've had no problems.

@BurntOrange very good. It is a very pretty name, I think you obviously move in more sophisticated circles than me... I think people where I live would defs pronounce the Au part as in English - aww, hence the problem.

@Edenember Ha, we definitely don't live anywhere sophisticated! Most people who see it written down, doctors etc don't even attempt it and ask.

@Orphlids, my Grandma was from rural Devon and she actually had a friend called Penelope, pronounced Pea-nuh-loap.
