I remember hearing this name when I was learning French and thinking I’ve found my favourite ever name... thought it was beautiful... then realised it’s pretty much orally in English so a no go. Has anyone else had the wind similarly knocked clean out of their sails by falling head over heels in love with a name only to have the crushing realisation it actually doesn’t work at all.

Not quite the same example but I was introduced to a colleague (well someone who was working for the client) called Seeanne. That may seem like a strange name but I know someone called Seeanne and that's how they pronounced. I emailed her and her email address was something like [email protected].. I started my email, "Hi Seeanne" and then she replied and signed off "Sian"..

@Cosmos45 so she was pronouncing her own name like that as well if you were introduced to her? Rather than it being a mistake on your colleagues part?

I once was told by a nurse who works on a maternity ward, and I don’t know if this is just one of those urban legend type stories because it just doesn’t sound true... that they had an African lady in giving birth, she had a little girl and the nurse doing the rounds asked if she’d decided on a name... to which she replied the midwives named her and pointed to babies wristband... Female. She was pronouncing it Fe-mah-lee. I think that if your grasp of English was good enough to be chatting to the nurse, then that would be a word you’re familiar with, on top of other things like simply accepting someone else has named your baby... But yeah.

@Edenember yes she pronounced the name the same, it was not the colleague who had messed up (i think he knew how to pronounce it perfectly) but her mother saw See Anne in Sian and named and pronounced the child in that way
