Can I call a baby girl Andi or is this setting them up to fail?!?

Makes me of the actress from 4 weddings and a funeral.
Perfectly fine name though.

totiredtocare · 22/05/2020 21:47

I quite like it.

SlightlySleepy · 22/05/2020 21:53

Horrible. It's a middle aged bloke's name.

Momniscient · 22/05/2020 22:00

Any particular reason to spell it just with an I? Not Andie?

If you're not sure, you could use Andrea and then the kid can decide if they forever want to go through the "yes I'm a woman" or own it.

mamaduckbone · 22/05/2020 22:02

I had a friend at primary school called Andrea who was known as Andi until her teens when she reverted back to her full name. I'd go with that, personally.

june2007 · 22/05/2020 22:04

Not on it,s own no. Andrea is much nicer.

ShellsandSand · 22/05/2020 22:12

My Daughter is Andie, she's 5 and I absolutely love it on her. Named her after the cheerleader from Goonies.

ShellsandSand · 22/05/2020 22:13

Well didn't name her 'after' .... was inspired by should i say Grin

NannyPear · 22/05/2020 22:14

Ooh I love it

Blursula · 22/05/2020 22:58

Ooh I like it. Reminds me of Dawson’s Creek

inwood · 22/05/2020 22:58

I like it.

Hopefulmidwife · 22/05/2020 23:01

I like it. Reminds me of kate hudsons character in how to lose a guy in 10 days.

Stickyjack · 22/05/2020 23:12

I think it's more used as a girl's name in America than the UK, but will probably get better known here.

BackforGood · 22/05/2020 23:16

I know an adult Andi, who spends her whole life having to say

"No, Andi with an i instead of the y"
"Yes I am a woman"
"Oh, haven't you?" to the common "I've never head of Andi being for a woman before"
etc
etc
etc

The suggestion above of Andrea - giving her an option to use as a teen or an adult - even if you refer to her as 'Andi' when she is little, seems a good compromise.

BabyDancer · 23/05/2020 07:34

I knew an Andi but her actual name was Andrea on the birth certificate. I wouldn't give someone a nickname as their full name.

peanutsandcream · 23/05/2020 07:49

I know an Andi. Always assumed her actual name is Andrea. I like Andi but don't think I would like it as my name because it is traditionally a boys name. I would prefer Andrea and Andi as a nn.

doughnutmuffin · 23/05/2020 07:54

I worked with a girl called Andrea and went by Andi, although she was bloody gorgeous and it made her seem effortlessly cool

finallychangedmyusername · 23/05/2020 08:13

Andi would work as a nickname for Alexandra too (although I prefer Andra as it's that bit softer).

Spirali · 23/05/2020 10:42

I love it as a stand alone name! I have done since I was a teen and saw ‘how to lose a guy in 10 days’ Smile

squashyhat · 23/05/2020 10:53

Currently watching Saturday Kitchen with chef Andi Oliver. Why not?

ShellsandSand · 23/05/2020 10:56

Ahh @spirali saw you loved my eldest Daughters name on another thread and now my youngest. You're the best Grin

Ijustreallywantacat · 23/05/2020 10:56

Sure why not! I am a defender of nn as actual names, as I have one myself!

june2007 · 23/05/2020 10:57

Andi Oliver is an Andrea, it,s her nickname.

endofthelinefinally · 23/05/2020 11:02

I think it is kinder to give the child a normal name, then use an appropriate shortened version or nickname if you wish.
They have to live with it.
Andrea is a lovely name. Andi is a pretty shortened version.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 23/05/2020 11:14

Andie Macdowell (the Four Weddings Actress) uses her nickname. Her full name is Rosalie Anderson MacDowell. (missing point of thread . . . . 😁)

Love Andie as a nn, but personally would give the child a "full" name which they could use as they got older if they preferred. Living with an actual name which can be a shortened version of another can be a pita (think an actual Vikki, who everyone assumes is Victoria).
