Wilfred alternatives

Hello

Due to have our baby a few days ago and thought we had settled on Wilfred
.......apparently not as the OH has started to pull faces.

So the other names we like are Louis (but just doesn't go with our last name and is quite popular) and Ellis (Also a no-go) and Rowan (Maybe) we like names with history but are a bit different too.....

Any suitable Wilfred alternatives?!

Wouldn't use anything that common and we will avoid the more popular of the historical names such as....Edmund, Edward, Edwin, Alfred, Albert, William, Henry, Percy, Ralph etc etc

If we have a girl I think....with the help of mumsnetters ;)..... we have settled on Edith.

I don't like last names as first names.

Sorry if I'm asking the impossible but any suggestions????

Oh and just to add my son and OH are trying to bully me in to Melvyn. Melvyn?! I have no idea how the heck that name has arrived on my table!
Help! Confused

Melvyn! Haha, yes let's steer them away from that.

What about Wilfred has your DH gone off? Is it the Boris connection (that would do it for me)?

Wilbur
Winston
Barnaby/Barnabas
Rupert
Ernest
Elmer
Franklin

Some of these may be a bit fuddy-duddy!

Aquamarine1029 · 21/05/2020 13:47

How about Wilford?

Whatsyourflava · 21/05/2020 13:50

I hope Boris hasn't put your off Wilfred ! His baby will be totally out of the spotlight. I don't know what any of his many other kids are called.

You know that Percy really isn't that common right? Number 399 in the charts. Much less common than Wilfred. I know Wilfred is also fairly rare but Percy is rarer.

Also if you say you're wanting to avoid too popular names I'd avoid RoWan. It's storming up the charts in its own right but is also so similar to other names (RoHan, Roan, Ronan, Roman) that it feels even more common than it actually is. RoMan (with an M) is the current top fastest rising boy name. All the TOWIE lot are using it. It's climbed 600 places to be top 50 and will be top 20 in next couple of years on current growth trajectory.

I'm not sure about Melvyn - maybe I need to get used to it.

What about Vincent nn Vinnie or Vince

Whatsyourflava · 21/05/2020 13:53

I like Winston and rupert but not enough....
Never heard of wilford?! Hmm

How about Rory?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/05/2020 14:00

Wilbur. Cedric. Arthur. Leonard.

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 14:02

Wilford will be misheard as Wilfred for his whole life. I like Wilfred. Percy is slang for penis, if that bothers you.

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 14:02

I like Leonard. I think if I had a boy now I'd call him John though.

LondonTowers · 21/05/2020 14:04

@Whatsyourflava I know several Percy's where I am and Vinnie is pretty popular in my family... I wouldn't let a common name put me off if I loved it enough so I don't mind if it's not rare.
I have a Caspar and I like Eric, Otis, Rudy and Dexter but I know a few too and they aren't quite right anyway. I love Wilfred but its the OH that's changed his mind!

Wilbur? I know you said Percy is too popular but I believe Wilfred is a lot more popular. Especially after Boris used the name.

marshallrubblechaserockyzoomer · 21/05/2020 15:00

*common sorry

Maduixa · 21/05/2020 15:07

Aldous
Anselm
Bernard
Bertram/Bertrand
Clarence
Clement
Gerald
Giles
Lionel
Oswald
Raymond

Whatsyourflava · 21/05/2020 15:08

@marshallrubblechaserockyzoomer yes you're right- I said upthread that Percy is number 399 in the charts whereas Wilfred is number 146! So yes Percy is currently very rare.
I actually think Boris using Wilfred is putting people off using it. It's a real shame as no one will remember what his baby is called and Wilfred is such a lovely name. But I appreciate when you're naming a baby everything is heightened and it feels like everyone will be thinking of Boris' baby. The popularity of Charlotte went down after William and Kate used it

If he likes Melvyn, perhaps Merryn instead? Much nicer name.

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 17:20

Isn't Merryn a girl's name? I know two girl Merryns.

LondonTowers · 21/05/2020 18:39

oh no I wasnt clear....I dont like the name percy! and its no matter if it's a bit popular, I listed the names I personally know a lot of where I am living and Percy is one of them x
