Nancy Or Pearl

Really struggling to decide between the two.

Nancy has always been one of my favourite girl's names, and Pearl is my mother's name (she's amazing).

Thoughts?

Pearl! Nancy is a bit twee.

chunkycoke · 07/05/2020 11:35

Nancy! It’s gorgeous.

Flippinfurloughed · 07/05/2020 11:36

I’m not a fan of Nancy at all (I knew a horrible one so I have biased associations!) but I love Pearl.

Charis1503 · 07/05/2020 11:45

Personally I dislike both.

Nancy is harsh and horrid ( sorry!!)

I thought I loved pearl untill one at toddler club was constantly being called pearlie - which sounded like Peepee.

Im not sure in a sea of Olivias, Ava's or Millie's she will thank you in 14 years time...

Other old fashion names....

Aubree? Clara?

forsucksfake · 07/05/2020 11:49

Not fond of Nancy at all not sounds like an insult. Pearl is nice.

forsucksfake · 07/05/2020 11:49

"It sounds" not "not sounds"

hermionegrange · 07/05/2020 11:51

Both really lovely names, and both our top contenders if we had had a girl!

I love Nancy, but Pearl is beautiful. Lovely that it is your mums name, too.

Which goes best with your surname?

SnowdropFox · 07/05/2020 12:00

I adore Pearl but I just cannot get past references to having a "pearl necklace". If you dont have filthy minded friends then I'd go with Pearl. It's far more beautiful than Nancy.

LotusClover · 07/05/2020 12:02

Very strongly dislike both. I have a list of least favourite names and these are both on there.

Nancy is dated and sounds silly.

Pearl is a stripper name to me. I cringe every time I hear it. Sorry Confused

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 07/05/2020 12:03

Pearl. It’s beautiful.

I’ve always had an irrational dislike of the name Nancy. Makes me think of the poor women getting beaten in Oliver Twist and the horrid insult “Nancy boy”.

AravisTarkheena · 07/05/2020 12:07

I have to say Nancy is one of the few names that I find actually objectionable. I know a Nancy who is 12 now and in all that time I’ve never got used to the name - most names, even ones I don’t like, actually start to ‘become’ that person quite quickly, (and I forget that i don’t much like the names) but Nancy always feels like I’m talking to a cartoon character. Also David Cameron has a daughter called Nancy and he has poor judgement.

Pemba · 07/05/2020 12:09

I'm sorry but I find both names quite frumpy.

Riv12345 · 07/05/2020 12:18

Sorry but both horrible

Nancy- it's just wrong,
We use to say to boys at school oh your a right Nancy!!!

Pearl- hmmmm I wouldn't have it

Sorry OP but you did ask

ShaniaPayne · 07/05/2020 12:19

I love the name Nancy - I had a much-loved great-aunt Nancy.

Pearl's a singer. Patricia's the Stripper.

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/05/2020 12:22

I love Pearl, though where I’m from it’s a boy’s name.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/05/2020 12:23

Love Nancy.

Luckingfovely · 07/05/2020 12:28

I can't bear either, I'm sorry. Pearl necklace and a Nancy boy. Both have horrid connections.

I also don't think they will fit well in this generation.

BUT - as always, there will be mixed opinions on any name - if you love them don't discuss them with anyone and stick to your guns!

Pemba · 07/05/2020 12:41

A boy's name Grumpy - how is this? Where do you come from? Interested because traditionally all jewel names, eg Ruby are for girls. Like flower names.

Viviennemary · 07/05/2020 12:48

I like Pearl best.

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/05/2020 13:03

@Pemba - I am in a part of the UK with a friend circle from north india. So many male Pearls - the Hindi version is Moti which is generally a boy’s name as it has a very similar pronunciation to the Hindi word for fat woman.

Boireannachlaidir · 07/05/2020 13:07

Pearl

Spied · 07/05/2020 13:11

Nancy

IVflytrap · 07/05/2020 13:26

Slightly prefer Pearl, but both are nice.

Nancy, harsh? Nancy has pretty much the least harsh sounds of any name in existence in my opinion, but each to their own!

Peachbubble · 07/05/2020 13:28

Never been a fan of Nancy, sorry, so I'd choose Pearl.

DOINGOURBIT · 07/05/2020 13:37

I'm feeling very fragile at the moment, lost loved ones.... My name's Nancy. I don't like it much, but my mother obviously did. It brings tears to my eyes that someone finds my name objectionable, and like talking to a cartoon character.

Please remember that people on here have names you may not like, and while you are entitled to your opinion, in these difficult times when emotions are running high, please don't be too harsh. 'Objectionable' is pretty scathing.
