Hi,

I’m expecting a boy in a few weeks time. DH and I are currently stick between Tudor and Thatcher for our second child.

I prefer Thatcher but I’m worried it would remind people of Margret Thatcher.

Our first child is called Plum so we definitely like names “out there”.

Thanks for any help.

I knew Tudor was a Welsh name but a Romanian friend of mine also has a son called that.

Definitely Tudor over Thatcher. Definitely. Even without the family connections.

Troels · 29/04/2020 23:01

The only men named Tudor I've known were Welsh and they said it as Tudur, but spelt it Tudor

Dhalandchips · 29/04/2020 23:01

I used to love a canny bag of tudor. Gammon flavour especially. Definitely not thatcher. Milk snatcher.

ladycarlotta · 29/04/2020 23:01

aha, looked it up. Tudor is a version of Theodore. That makes sense.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/04/2020 23:05

More usually Tudur in Wales, as not pronounced the same as the Tudors.
Tenpole Tudor. Hahaha. But preferable to Thatcher.
Thatcher. Why ? Why ? Thatcher the milk snatcher. Please don’t inflict this on a little baby. I can see Ben Elton saying Thatch in my mind as I type.

Barryisland · 29/04/2020 23:08

I dont believe that anyone would actually call their child Plum.
Maybe as a nickname ? But not as a first name.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/04/2020 23:12

Plum Sykes is actually called Victoria. Plum is her family pet name.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 29/04/2020 23:13

I really like Tudor, but an ex-colleague's husband is called Tudor so I heard it fair bit and it grew on me!

Thatcher is a total no go though.

Bubbletrouble43 · 29/04/2020 23:15

Not keen on thatcher. Maggie, cider. Doesn't feel like a name. I quite like tudor though.

GreyGardens88 · 29/04/2020 23:16

I don't believe this is real, sorry

Anoisagusaris · 29/04/2020 23:17

Thatcher is Merdith’s father’s name in Grey’s Anatomy.

IKEA888 · 29/04/2020 23:19

Fletcher instead of thatcher

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 29/04/2020 23:19

I know a Tudor, he’s Romanian though, not Welsh. I like it.

Just NO to Thatcher.

PorpentiaScamander · 29/04/2020 23:20

I have a friend who's middle name is Tudor
I really like it.

onlinelinda · 29/04/2020 23:21

No to both.

frenchfancy81 · 29/04/2020 23:24

Plum?

Viviennemary · 29/04/2020 23:26

Jurassic or Drystone Waller.

midwestsummer · 29/04/2020 23:27

Tudor is a normal enough name in the USA.

EvilTwins · 29/04/2020 23:27

I used to teach a boy called Tudor. He was lovely kid. NN was Dory though. As in Finding Nemo. That was unfortunate.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 29/04/2020 23:30

What was the thinking behind Thatcher? Did you know it was a vaguely recent British prime minister's surname? And a brand of popular cider?

And I definitely associate Tudor with a brand of crisps, as well known as Golden Wonder.

scrivette · 29/04/2020 23:42

I know a Tudor, I like it. (He is an older Welsh man).

Thefaceofboe · 29/04/2020 23:48

I dont believe that anyone would actually call their child Plum

I remember a poster who has a daughter called Plum and unfortunately I know one in real life Hmm

Neednewwellies · 29/04/2020 23:54

Crisps for me too. Pickled onion flavour to be precise.
Not Thatcher; not for many years yet. I wanted to call my son, Blair, but I knew I couldn’t without obvious association and I voted for the man. But you simply cannot give your child a name that so radically divides the nation.

CoffeeandLotsofCake · 29/04/2020 23:59

I know of a woman called Plum. She's in her 30s and comes from quite a bohemian family. Her siblings also have what would be considered 'out there' names.

I know of a Tudor. He's Welsh and a gentle giant. Also in his 30s so I've never seen it as an old man's name.

Yoshinori · 30/04/2020 00:39

Anyone of a certain age (40+) and from the North East, will instantly think crisps the minute they hear 'Tudor'. Like me.

To be fair, I’m not in 40+ and my child won’t likely be hanging out with anyone 40+. I also don’t live in the North East of England. I assume you mean England.

I dont believe that anyone would actually call their child Plum

I get that Plum is an out there name but there’s nothing offensive about the name in any way.
