Margaret

I keep seeing Margaret being suggested here, but it seems to be one of those marmite names.

What do people think? Due a comeback?

(I'm not thinking of using it myself, just curious.)

Personally I like it.

Love it, especially the nickname Maggie

Whatsyourflava · 29/04/2020 09:40

The Crown made me fall in love with the name Margaret such a cool character

Defenestratethecat · 29/04/2020 09:46

Lovely, classic and so many nice 'nicknames'

DerekMorganswife · 29/04/2020 09:56

My daughter's middle name is Margaret. I love it.

Chirpychirpy3 · 29/04/2020 09:58

I love classic names but I just can’t get on board with Margaret. I much prefer Katherine, Elizabeth and Victoria.

pinkpinecone · 29/04/2020 10:01

I don't think it's very nice and makes me think of Margaret Thatcher.

No harm using it as a middle name if it has significance but wouldn't saddle a child with it especially in an era of 'pretty' sounding girly names like Olivia, Isla and Ava.

Pemba · 29/04/2020 10:02

Nooo! Still has a bit of a stuffy middle aged vibe. Hate 'Maggie' too - so harsh.

I mean I know it is a classic name, yet somehow it doesn't seem timeless in the same way as, say, Elizabeth.

Perhaps it is due a comeback though, and younger people may not think of the name that way.

ArriettyJones · 29/04/2020 10:07

It’s lovely in itself and also has many established diminutives ( Maggie, Madge, Daisy, Marge, Margot, Molly, Meg, and Peggy.) So it’s flexible. Definitely due a comeback.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2020 10:09

I like it as a middle name.

I like Maggie, Peggy, Daisy, Meg and Greta (but going off that one) as nn.

Margarita, Marged or Mared (Welsh) are nice versions.

whatausername · 29/04/2020 10:49

Butt ugly, it's very harsh sounding. A great name to screech though!

JKScot4 · 29/04/2020 10:51

Horrible name, anyone I know called it, hates it.

whatausername · 29/04/2020 10:51

Mar-grit. Just horrible sounds! Yuck. Buuuuuut each to their own of course. Smile

bridgetreilly · 29/04/2020 11:03

I think it's an excellent name.

LotusClover · 29/04/2020 11:09

Don't like it. Extremely dated and doesn't look or sound nice to me. It could be pulled off as a middle name if it has some significance as someone else suggested, but I would never use it as a first name.

CaptainWentworth · 29/04/2020 11:15

DM is a Margaret and we have used it as a middle name for DD 18m. Actually DM is Margaret Elizabeth although DGM always denied she was named after ‘the two princesses’ 😂

I suppose it is a little bit old fashioned but I wanted to use the name and it goes well with DD’s other names. We also considered Margot as a first name instead but it didn’t seem to suit her.

Flymetothestars · 29/04/2020 11:20

I love the name - so classy -and has the best nicknames ever

SnowdropFox · 29/04/2020 11:25

No thanks. Not my taste at all! Frumpy.

PeartreeProductions · 29/04/2020 11:25

My middle name but I'm not keen on it, has a dull but harsh vibe about it. Also the Thatcher connection still lingers.
Maggie is alright though.

babynamelover · 29/04/2020 11:28

My late Nan's name and my mil name too so dd #2 has it for her middle. I teach a wee Margot and it's really grown on me 😊.

IndiaMay · 29/04/2020 11:32

Like it, and the nicknamed Maggie, Daisy or Meg. Prefer Margot or Marguerite

SallyWD · 29/04/2020 12:05

I really like it.

123Dancewithme · 29/04/2020 12:15

I think it’s due a comeback, along with Mary.

Hotpinkangel19 · 29/04/2020 12:21

My mum was a Margaret but absolutely hated the name! She always went by 'Maggie' as it was more friendly sounding. Sadly she died in 2017 when I was pregnant with my youngest daughter, when she was born people asked if she would be named after her - I think they expected Margaret as her middle name, but Mum would have hated that!!!! 🤣

Blursula · 29/04/2020 12:38

I think it’s really harsh and ugly sounding, sorry. And also just makes me think of Thatcher

bridgetreilly · 29/04/2020 13:29

Greta is another lovely shortened form of it. I think that's one of the reasons it's such a good name. So much potential for individualisation.
