Alternative to Matilda

Changed username to avoid outing myself....
A close friend used the name Matilda. I loved and adored this name. We don't leave nearby so children aren't going to go to school together, however they will be friends growing up. I am also close to their family, so I feel morally I cannot use. I'm quite sad as I loved the name.

So I've been considering Tilly/Tillie. But my name begins with a T and ends in I, so I'm worried it will be too rhymey. Tilly dates back to the early 1900's as a given name.

Any other alternatives you think I may like?
I literally look at every name and it doesn't feel the same as Matilda.

Thanks.

I would use Tilly. I know one whose sister is Beth, both BC names.

Nancy.

Tilda or Tildie 💗

babynamelover · 19/04/2020 03:57

My daughter's at school with a Tilly-Rose :). You might also like Tully.

Megan2018 · 19/04/2020 04:56

They will likely use Tilly so they’ll end up with the same name anyway. Use Matilda if you don’t end up preferring something else.

I think these are similar
Jemima
Tabitha
Florence
Otillie

I’d go with Otillie, then you have legitimate cause to use Tilly!

Or Clotilda Smile

35andThriving · 19/04/2020 14:04

Oh dear, just googled and Clotilda was the last ship used to bring slaves to America Sad

I saw the name Clotilde in a name book the other day and thought it was pretty. It's a saint's name. Completely understand why no one uses it now.

Don't want my last post to make me look pro-slavery! Didn't realise the history of the name.

Thank you all!
Your suggestions have been wonderful.

I am seriously considering the name Summer and it sounds lovely with my sons name. Thank you all.

Talitha or Tabitha?. If you really like the Tilly nickname though, then Tilda would work.

notthemum · 19/04/2020 16:11

Millicent - Milly for short.

Beekeeper1 · 19/04/2020 16:15

My partner's name is Batilda (from the old German and Norse, meaning 'woman warrior', very apt in her case, usually shortened to Tilder. However, you may think it too similar to Matilda, but I love it! She is from an East African country, hence the German connection

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 19/04/2020 16:34

Milly might be a good compromise for you. Like Matilda and Tilly.

vintagechick43 · 19/04/2020 16:42

Lydia

midsomermurderess · 20/04/2020 21:14

Maud. It's a variant of Matilda. Might be a brave choice though.

hoping2018 · 20/04/2020 22:44

Felicity? I don't know why but I put it in same group as Matilda!
