Alternative to Matilda

Changed username to avoid outing myself....
A close friend used the name Matilda. I loved and adored this name. We don't leave nearby so children aren't going to go to school together, however they will be friends growing up. I am also close to their family, so I feel morally I cannot use. I'm quite sad as I loved the name.

So I've been considering Tilly/Tillie. But my name begins with a T and ends in I, so I'm worried it will be too rhymey. Tilly dates back to the early 1900's as a given name.

Any other alternatives you think I may like?
I literally look at every name and it doesn't feel the same as Matilda.

Thanks.

An alternative form of Matilda is Maud/Maude.
Queen Matilda was also called Maude.
Or you could use the French form of Matilde
It what about Tilda as in Tilda Swinton?

EugeniaGrace · 18/04/2020 14:09

I think Martha sound better. Both two syllables.

Eleanor is similar time to Matilda in my mind as both are ancient queens.

Also Clothilde but it is much less popular.

Marianne?

Hi summersun (won't let me tag you for some reason!)

I think Noah and Martha go better actually. And the name Martha is found in the New Testament so they have that little biblical element in common?

If it were ME I'd choose Martha but I do slightly prefer that name - but if YOU still prefer Matilda I honestly don't see why you couldn't, it's gorgeous and timeless, and I do think it also goes nicely with Noah!

DD is Matilda.

On our list were:

Eleanor
Hannah
Harriet

Clara
Philippa
Martha

Hi, my names Matilda and I really encourage you using it as I absolutely love it - it’s shortened to Tilly usually anyway but I love having the option of it longer. If you have your baby and look at her and she looks like a Matilda, call her that, you don’t want to regret not calling her it.
Some other names
Margot
Mabel
Martha
Tallulah
Marlow

Martha, but if you use that you really use Matilda for middle name can you?

CockblockingCowboy · 18/04/2020 15:56

We had settled on Matilda for our daughter, plus middle name.

Then close friends announced they had chosen the Matilda with the same middle name for their daughter due two weeks before ours.

We could still have used Matilda and in the scheme of things it didn't matter a jot, but we decided to go with one of other names that we both liked (probably would have still used Matilda though had birth dates not been as close and middle names the same but hey ho).

So we now have an Eliza Rose instead of a Matilda Rose (and I know of at least two other Eliza Roses)

Ellmau · 18/04/2020 16:13

What about Miranda?

Whatsyourflava · 18/04/2020 16:15

Both Martha and Matilda are lovely and sound amazing with Noah

Orphlids · 18/04/2020 18:02

As someone else has suggested, how about Mathilde? I’m not too keen on Matilda, but I do think the French version is SO pretty. And not too far off what you were originally planning.

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/04/2020 18:06

Maud? It's essentially the same name as Matilda.

daisypond · 18/04/2020 18:51

Other ancient names from around the same time as Matilda:
Marjorie
Millicent
Agnes
Hilda
Muriel
Mildred
Maud is a short form of Matilda.
Matilda has been popularised because of Roald Dahl, so we’ve got more accustomed to it.

Robs20 · 18/04/2020 18:58

Martha is lovely. Matilda and Eliza were the two names on our list for dd1. I also liked Florence, Flora and Jemima.

ThanosSavedMe · 18/04/2020 19:00

Go with Matilda,

phoenixrosehere · 18/04/2020 19:06

Matilda over Martha to go with Noah..

Martha is a bit too rhyming and I can’t get the picture of an elderly woman or the mothers of Batman and Superman out of my head.

I love Tilly. Short and sweet 🙂

summersun7 · 18/04/2020 19:24

@phoenixrosehere I quite tempted to use Tilly as a first name. X

Could you have a name like Talitha and shorten to Tallie?

FAQs · 18/04/2020 19:51

Meredith?

whitedaisies · 18/04/2020 19:52

I know a Matilda whose sister is Rosalind

JanewaysBun · 18/04/2020 20:00

I prefer merida to Matilda

badg3r · 18/04/2020 21:19

Use Matilda on the BC and call her Tilly.

Morred · 18/04/2020 21:32

Or Miriam (nn Mim)? That has a similar feel to Matilda, for me.

KindKylie · 18/04/2020 21:37

I would either just use it anyway (my cousin and I both have the same name, born weeks apart and it honours a relative in common. My dm was devastated when she was born and named first but carried on regardless and it's never been a problem and I'm pleased because I like my name and it s family link).

Or use Martha nn Mattie - I actually prefer this to Matilda anyway.

If you love Matilda, use it. Don't use Tilly instead as it's so similar and linked the issue will be the same and you may as well have used the name you wanted.
