Daphnie do you like it or not?

Is Daphnie (yes we want the spelling to be that way) cute, too old fashioned. We don't care too much about the scooby reference. Hubby and I both love it. But grandparents hate it.

OP posts:

Daphne - Yes
Daphnie - Noooooooooo
There are some names you can do that with Daphne isn't one of them.

Some -ie ending names:
Katie
Zoie
Indie
Kylie
Amelie
Valerie
Sophie
Natalie
Dulcie
Lucie (French)
Lottie
Hallie
Marie
Elodie
Charlie
Billie

Best of luck Smile

Why would Delphi meet the OPs criteria anyway. Apparently it's important to her mum Hmm to have an "ie" ending.

OP Daphnie is awful. People won't say so to your face but they'll think it. Either spell it correctly or choose something else. Natalie, Annie, Jessie

The Delphie suggestion instantly made me think of the American unsolved murdered of two little girls.

HarrietM87 · 17/04/2020 10:37

My name is a classic 80s name that has two standard and acceptable spellings (like Catherine and Katherine). Like many pps have said, people get it wrong more often than not, even when they’ve been told, and it happens all the time in emails at work when the correct spelling is right there in my email address!

Think how much worse it would be if there is actually only one correct spelling and the one you’ve given your daughter is actually completely made up and wrong. No one will get it right ever. It will drive her mad.

Mucklowe · 17/04/2020 10:54

That is an absolutely ridiculous reason to saddle your daughter with a name that makes her/you sound illiterate.

MrMeSeeks · 17/04/2020 11:13

N o, just no.
Use the proper spelling or something different

cheeseandpickledonions · 17/04/2020 11:18

Daphnie- awful
Daphne - still not great

Maybe it's time to break the -ie tradition. Seems a bit kardashian to me

AnnUumellemahaye · 17/04/2020 11:41

This has reminded me of all the poor girls called Pheobe because their parents couldn't get their head around the O coming first.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/04/2020 15:17

I also think you should pick a name that suits the child, and that you like - I don’t like the idea of having to restrict your choice because of something the child’s grandma wants. The children are individuals, not part of a set of dolls.

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/04/2020 17:32

Daphne is lovely, Daphnie isn’t.

This thread has reminded me of Britain’s largest family, The Radfords. They have just has their 22nd (I believe?) child and named her Heidie to keep up with the ‘ie’ tradition too. I couldn’t help think what a lovely name ruined by a silly tradition-especially when said aloud they all end in the same sound anyway. If you do decide to use the name, please use the correct spelling.

GaraMedouar · 17/04/2020 17:35

Daphne - great. Daphnie - nope.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 17/04/2020 17:38

Lovely name, but your chosen spelling is hideous. Not cute or quirky. Hideous. You will be judged and so, I'm afraid, will your daughter.

PancakePattie · 17/04/2020 17:50

Daphnie with the ie ending looks wrong, wrong, wrong. Everyone on the thread agrees!
I think you either need to go with Daphne or pick another name.

CountFosco · 17/04/2020 17:53

I also remember a Rachel in reception class crying because everyone always got her name wrong, on birthday party invites the parents would be told the names and would always assume Rachael and it really really upset her.

I'm not surprised, Rachel is the correct spelling and Rachael is the common misspelling (people assume it is like Michael, it's not).

greathat · 17/04/2020 18:08

Don't spell it wrong. She will always be Daphne who's parents are idiots that didn't bother checking how to spell their child's name

moveandmove · 17/04/2020 18:19

Why don't you pick a name that actually has ie on the end rather than make one up which makes you look a bit silly?

TotesGodsWill · 17/04/2020 19:39

No. Just no.

Daphne isn’t my taste but is perfectly nice.

If you really care so much about a name ending in ie then choose a diffferent name

JulesM73 · 17/04/2020 19:48

Dear god, no no no no no

nicky7654 · 17/04/2020 19:52

Oh no definitely not! Some names just need to stay in the past like Maude and Ethel lol .

villamariavintrapp · 17/04/2020 21:25

I love Daphne. Why don't you call her that and your mum can spell it Daphnie as a nickname/in joke?

user1477391263 · 18/04/2020 02:25

Daphne is a lovely name. But if you spell it "Daphnie," unfortunately people will make assumptions that your child comes from a not-very-educated family. Don't shoot the messenger.

CatteStreet · 18/04/2020 07:26

I'm afraid everyone is right about the spelling, OP. If the -ie ending is so important to you, use one of the numerous names that actually end that way.

To your parents' generation, Daphne (spelt properly!) is likely to feel like a properly old-fashioned name, a bit like our generation generally views names such as Janet, Karen and Lindsay. But 30s and 40s names have started coming round again and Daphne is definitely one of them - I would think ahead-of-the-curve hipster parents on being introduced to a little Daphne. I do actually like the name, as well.

(On being introduced to a little Daphnie, however, I would think what user above says. Sorry).

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/04/2020 14:50

I do agree that Daphne is an old-fashioned name, but I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing, and it is a pretty name.
