Daphnie do you like it or not?

Is Daphnie (yes we want the spelling to be that way) cute, too old fashioned. We don't care too much about the scooby reference. Hubby and I both love it. But grandparents hate it.

Spell it Daphne or you will look daftie,

Gemma2019 · 16/04/2020 22:07

You say it is special to carry on the ie for your mother - so does she like Daphnie or is she one of the grandparents who dislike it?

Please don't do it - there are so many nice names ending in ie already.

DressingGown123 · 16/04/2020 22:07

@glitterbiscuits just spat my tea out. Thanks for that Grin

AndromedaPerseus · 16/04/2020 22:08

Don’t hold back Ann Grin

mistermagpie · 16/04/2020 22:08

Daphne is lovely. Daphnie is not. It's actually quite hard to look at with that 'i' shoved in the middle. Imagine Phoebie- it just looks stupid.

If you want an 'ie' name there are lots to choose from which don't require butchering another name.

italy93 · 16/04/2020 22:09

It's a cute name but would always make me think of Scooby Doo!

Figgygal · 16/04/2020 22:10

I love the name but not spelt like that sorry

Windyatthebeach · 16/04/2020 22:13

Daffy as in the duck?

Danglingmod · 16/04/2020 22:15

Daphne - gorgeous
Daphnie - just no.

You can have alternative spellings of names which are just names or diminutives of names - Molly/Mollie, Lucy/Lucie, Cally/Callie...

You can't have alternative spellings of things which are actual things (often flowers or other nature names): Lily, Poppy, Ivy, Daphne, Dawn...

Blondie1092 · 16/04/2020 22:16

If you spell it "Daphnie" the correct pronunciation is "daph-nai-ee"
I don't mean to be rude but as someone else mentioned earlier, it does make you look uneducated.
I'm the first to admit I always judge people if they don't spell their children's names correctly. Irish names with the fada the wrong way is probably the worst offence for me.
Nothing wrong with the name but please please spell it correctly for the sake of your child.

Snaga · 16/04/2020 22:16

Your baby, your choice but hardly anyone will tell you the truth to your face so please believe those on here who are. Daphnie is awful. Daphne is lovely.

If you want to be judged as one of those parents and give your daughter a lifetime of awkward name moments crack on. If not choose Daphne as it's meant to be or a different ...ie name.

Etinox · 16/04/2020 22:16

Please don’t spell it that way.

CodenameVillanelle · 16/04/2020 22:17

If you spell it Daphnie you will look stupid. Sorry.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/04/2020 22:19

I agree with the majority, I’m afraid, @Momma2L - it looks like a typo, and is a clunky mismatch of a Classical Greek name with a British diminutive.

There may be several ways to spell Courtney, but there is only one way to spell Daphne, that I know of - it is a false equivalence.

Please don’t saddle your dd with a misspelled name - there are plenty of names that do end -ie or have a diminutive ending in -ie - you don’t need to misspell Daphne.

Bouledeneige · 16/04/2020 22:20

Don't really love Daphne as its so old fashioned to me. But obviously Daphne is ten times better than your preferred spelling. I'm sorry but people will assume you're a bit ignorant/stupid. The name comes from the flower.

Personally I prefer Delphine. Pretentious moi?

Emmagen · 16/04/2020 22:21

I like the name but with the weird spelling you are setting her up for a lifetime of having it spelt wrong, having to spell it out over the phone and reassuring people that it isn't a typo. They sound like minor things but they get very irritating very very quickly.

I have a name that can be said in 2 different ways and that drives me bonkers at least it only has one well known spelling! I also remember a Rachel in reception class crying because everyone always got her name wrong, on birthday party invites the parents would be told the names and would always assume Rachael and it really really upset her.

WantToBeMum · 16/04/2020 22:26

Not adding anything new. Love the name Daphne, but absolutely horrible to spell it Daphnie! Some names can pull off an alternative spelling, this isn't one of them. She will have to correct it her whole life.
Can't your family tradition be carried on with the "e" sound rather than the "ie" spelling?

drumandthebass · 16/04/2020 22:34

Awful name

Ikeameatballs · 16/04/2020 22:37

I love Daphne. Daphnie not so much.

pictish · 16/04/2020 22:40

Nice enough name, terrible spelling. If you must have an ie name for the family connection I think it would be better to choose something more typically spelled that way, Daphnie looks like a spelling mistake.

hotstepper4 · 16/04/2020 22:40

Not Daphnie, she'll spend her whole life with people thinking she's misspelled her own name.

What about Delphie?

Cheerfullygo4 · 16/04/2020 22:42

Daphne lovely but Daphnie is too try hard to be original.

pictish · 16/04/2020 22:43

And look, you’re not going to have time to explain your chosen spelling to everyone either. Most will simply assume you didn’t know how to spell Daphne.

FagashJackie · 16/04/2020 22:43

I love Daphne.

The spelling with an i would make we want to use two ie sounds, and I really don't like the way it looks. Like Chloie.

I really like Maggie, Sophie and Jeanie off the top of my head.

saraclara · 16/04/2020 22:45

Daphne will sound like the other ie names. Won't that do? Because your daughter will hate you for spelling it your way.

It's easier to have a made up name than a name that people think they can spell, but it turns out to be different. I have one of the latter types as my surname, and it's a total pain, because documents come with the name spelled wrong, my emails go to someone with the usual spelling of my surname instead of me, etc, and it's really hard to put right (or even know about in the case of missing emails).
