Daphnie do you like it or not?

Is Daphnie (yes we want the spelling to be that way) cute, too old fashioned. We don't care too much about the scooby reference. Hubby and I both love it. But grandparents hate it.

The thing is, OP, is that there is a right and a wrong way of spelling virtually all names, particularly one based on a Greek flower. If you spell it wrongly, you will come across as ignorant of the correct way of spelling it.

Your family tradition of ending all names with 'ie' is all very well, but then you need to choose a name that will end in 'ie' - you shouldn't just make it up yourself.

pontiouspilates · 16/04/2020 22:53

Pretty name but the spelling is clunky.

fratellia · 16/04/2020 22:53

I always think of daphne and Celeste and I don’t know why because they’re so irrelevant now.

I0NA · 16/04/2020 22:53

Just chose and Ie name then.

I like it.

LavenderLilacTree · 16/04/2020 22:56

Not.
I like the name but not the spelling.

Charlie
Elodie

Dhalandchips · 16/04/2020 22:57

Daft spelling. As someone with an 'ie' name, just don't!

KatherineJaneway · 16/04/2020 22:58

I Googled your spelling and it returned 'Common water fleas'

Go with Daphne.

Viviennemary · 16/04/2020 22:59

It's not a very attractive name. But absolutely awful with that strange spelling. Please don't.

NearlyGranny · 16/04/2020 23:01

Daphne spelt the classic way is uncommon and lovely. Ignore grandparents' opinions (bad idea to dicuss it with them imo, better to just announce after the birth!) they named their own children; now it's your turn.

Hamsterriffic · 16/04/2020 23:03

Love the name, with the traditional spelling though....

Ellmau · 16/04/2020 23:05

Could you call her Daphne but use Daphie as a nickname?

whatausername · 16/04/2020 23:05

Not.

NuffSaidSam · 16/04/2020 23:07

Agree with everyone else.

Name is fine, but spell it correctly.

If it has to be an ie name, then you can't have Daphne because it isn't an ie name! It's that simple.

What about Sophie? Or Darcie?

TildaKauskumholm · 16/04/2020 23:07

The actual name Daphne is nice, but spelling it wrong makes it look awful.

Notajogger · 16/04/2020 23:08

Not a great name in my opinion but that spelling is ridiculous and as pps have said, would make you look illiterate/uneducated.

It would also drive her mad and if as you say none of the grandparents like it, they can't be too bothered about this tradition! If it is important, pick an -ie name. A tradition is all well and good but she would have to live with that name every day for her whole life, just for your family to have a warm fuzzy feeling for a few minutes thinking how she has an -ie name like them. It's not worth it or fair on the kid.

GADDay · 16/04/2020 23:08

Love Daphne. Really really dont like Daphnie.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 16/04/2020 23:08

There are loads of lovely IE names - why cause your child a total nightmare by spelling a name that most definitely doesn’t have an IE in it completely wrongly.

GADDay · 16/04/2020 23:12

I dont think OP is coming back.

Arseit · 16/04/2020 23:17

@glitterbiscuits has it!
Don’t do it op. ❎

Bunnyfuller · 16/04/2020 23:22

The i makes it look silly.

Yes, people spell different names different ways. But (hit me now) those spellings that are not the original are looked down on, and it puts the family into a certain bracket.

Spellings of usernames here are not comparable and cannot be used as a justification

NotNowPlzz · 16/04/2020 23:24

I think Daphnie is fine and actually prefer that spelling to the original. IDC if it's accurate to Greek or not ffs. But this is Mumsnet. You have to name your kids James and Clementine here.

NotNowPlzz · 16/04/2020 23:26

@Bunnyfuller 'certain bracket' ... Care to elaborate?

georgialondon · 16/04/2020 23:27

It looks like a misspelt version of Daphne. They would get their name misspelt all the time. But I say if you love it then use it. It's your baby your choice.
