Daphnie do you like it or not?

Is Daphnie (yes we want the spelling to be that way) cute, too old fashioned. We don't care too much about the scooby reference. Hubby and I both love it. But grandparents hate it.

Courtney is spelled like 6 different ways.

Is it?!

From my experience of working with children and teenagers she is very unlikely to thank you for taking a name that has one accepted spelling and changing that spelling.

pallisers · 16/04/2020 21:46

There are some names that can end in y or ie.

Daphne isn't one of them. Neither is Chloe, Pheobe, Zoe. Or any of the other Greek names.

You can of course spell it any way you want but you doom her to a life of misspelling and questions of "why??"

pallisers · 16/04/2020 21:47

There are loads of girls names out there that actually end in "ie". Why wouldn't you pick one of them?

nopenothappening · 16/04/2020 21:50

Because "ie" is used as a diminutive suffix in English, which is fine except the name Daphne is of Greek origin, and "ie" is not a Greek diminutive suffix. It just looks butchered if you stick an "ie" on the end.

Rosy and Rosie or Katie and Katy are diminutives (of Rose and Catherine respectively). You can switch between "y" and "ie" because they mean the same. The ending on Daphne isn't a diminutive.

moobar · 16/04/2020 21:52

Yes agree with comments re spelling.

It's a really bad mix. Even saying daphne with an I doesn't work. Where?? Daiphne, daphine, daphnie.

Love daphne, really dislike the spelling

SueEllenMishke · 16/04/2020 21:52

Lovely name if you spell it the traditional way. If you add the 'i' it will be spelled incorrectly all the time and very frustrating.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 16/04/2020 21:54

If ie is so important why not choose a name ending on ie?

Daphne is lovely, Daphnie is absolutely awful.

peperethecat · 16/04/2020 21:55

Daphne is OK, don't love it, don't hate it.

Please please please don't spell it Daphnie. Your poor child will spend her whole life correcting people and everyone will assume you are illiterate.

Merename · 16/04/2020 21:55

Love love love Daphne - also really think the extra i is not good in this name. Agree with pps that some names lend themselves to alternative spellings, this one does not, I think it’d look daft. I can imagine classy, cool adult Daphne as a manager or someone intriguing- Daphnie just looks like a baby pet name that would be taken less seriously.

Haffdonga · 16/04/2020 21:56

If you want a name spelt with ie I'd choose a different name that actually ends in ie. If you want the sound of the name to fit with the family theme then go for Daphne spelt correctly.

daisypond · 16/04/2020 21:57

Many French names naturally end in -ie, so you could look at those. Marie, Sylvie, Julie, Natalie, Aurelie, etc.

Veterinari · 16/04/2020 21:58

@Momma2L

Courtney isn't Greek. Greek names don't end in ie. it's nonsensical to choose a traditional Greek name and change the spelling. Daphne is a lovely classic name. Daphnie makes you look like you can't spell. It's the equivalent of Pheobe

FairfaxAikman · 16/04/2020 21:58

Makes me think of The Broons.

Not awful though, so long as it's spelled correctly. Putting the unnecessary i in there means you are condemning her to a life of spelling it out.

ReallyLoveChickens · 16/04/2020 21:58

Dreadful spelling which she will have to recorrect her entire life.

Fuchsake · 16/04/2020 21:59

It’s spelled Daphne.

AnnUumellemahaye · 16/04/2020 21:59

I really Daphne but I think your spelling of it is awful. It’s a very classic Greek name, don’t mess with it. It will just confuse everyone and make you look a bit thick.

ellanwood · 16/04/2020 22:00

It's OK. Prefer the conventional spelling. The flower of the Daphne shrub has the most divine scent I've ever smelled, so that association is lovely.

melissasummerfield · 16/04/2020 22:02

People will judge you if you spell it like that.

It just screams low IQ to me, sorry OP.

I do like Daphne though.

Junobug · 16/04/2020 22:03

As someone with an 'alternative ' spelling. Please don't do it. Everyone thinks it's a great talking point to ask about the origin of your name and spelling but it's boring having the same conversation with everyone I meet and I hate my name because of it.
However, Daphne is a beautiful name. I had it on my list for dd2.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 16/04/2020 22:03

Please choose a different ie name. Daphnie does weird things to my head, it feels like it should be pronounced differently to Daphne.

What about
Callie
Rosalie
Elsie
Annie
Maisie

Please anything but Daphnie

user5656 · 16/04/2020 22:04

Love Daphne.
Daphnie is bloody awful.

Courtney is not great as an example of a name, not ever sorry.

It's Daphne, please don't inflict the ie on your daughter for traditions sake. Everything will think that you and her are idiots, unless you are an idiot?

dontdillydallytoolong · 16/04/2020 22:04

Daphne-pretty. Daphnie-nooooooooo!!

DressingGown123 · 16/04/2020 22:05

It's offensive to me. Sorry
