Hi me and my husband are expecting a baby girl in about 3 and a half months and we almost certain we want her name to be Polly but we’re debating on having a longer name that she can use if she wants when she’s older, do you think we should and do you have any suggestions?

It still might change but we really love the name Polly and the shortlist is Polly, Maria, Helena and Harriet but we think we want either Maria or Audrey as the middle name

I love the name Polly, I don't see why she would want a longer name to use? Do you mean you aren't giving her a middle name?

Bluesponge · 02/04/2020 16:21

A longer name that we can shoreten to Polly I mean

Bluesponge · 02/04/2020 16:23

Maria also has some meaning to us as it’s the name of my husbands late mother

Polly is a nickname for Mary traditionally.

Ouchiehelpneeded · 02/04/2020 16:30

I'm an adult Polly and I don't have any problem with not having a longer/more formal name to use Smile

SisterVanHelsing · 02/04/2020 16:30

I have a 16 year old Polly - she loves her name and has never mentioned wanting it to be longer or more formal. We gave her the middle name Elizabeth in case she wanted to change, but she definitely doesn't.

Flymetothestars · 02/04/2020 16:34

Love the name polly !! just use it on own- it’s perfect

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 02/04/2020 16:36

Polly Maria is excellent

MikeUniformMike · 02/04/2020 16:48

Pollyanna. There, I've suggested it before anyone else. And no, I am not serious.
Polly is a full name in itself.

Polly parrot, Polly put the kettle on - answer right back with Pretty Polly.

Polly can be short for Dorothy apparently Confused.

Those of you who like that sort of book - the lovely Polly Hamton was Leopoldina. I know a RL Leopoldina and it's a lovely name.

MikeUniformMike · 02/04/2020 16:55

Hampton not Hamton

Emthebaker · 02/04/2020 16:57

Polly Maria is so beautiful. A friend of mine has a baby Polly and always gets compliments on what a lovely name it is Smile

Zagazooo · 02/04/2020 17:21

Love Polly!

NoSauce · 02/04/2020 17:23

Polly is lovely. Maria would be a nice touch for DH. I like Harriet a lot too.

ThePlantsitter · 02/04/2020 17:23

I've got a Polly. I try to tell her her full name is Pollicent but she's not having it (quite rightly Grin)

Kaykay066 · 02/04/2020 17:23

Agree it’s lovely I don’t think she needs a longer name, Polly is lovely on its own and Maria goes with it beautifully

DickClarksNewYearsRockinEve · 02/04/2020 17:24

Polly is lovely as a stand-alone name.

I do know a Penelope who goes by Polly, though.

ThePlantsitter · 02/04/2020 17:27

Short for Pauline too I think.

SisterVanHelsing · 02/04/2020 17:50

Plantsitter I told my Polly her full name was Pollicent too Grin. She didn't believe me either.

We have a nurse Polly at our GP surgery but her real name is Pauline.

BuffaloCauliflower · 02/04/2020 17:52

Polly was originally a nickname for Mary, but it’s been a stand-alone name for centuries now. It’s a lovely name and I wouldn’t assume it was a nickname if I met one.

PlantPotting · 02/04/2020 17:53

Polly is lovely

Bluesponge · 02/04/2020 18:08

Thanks for all your lovely advice I’ve now with your help successfully convinced myself and my husband that Polly doesn’t need to be short for anything Smile

SisterVanHelsing aw, did you?! That's made me feel really nice for some reason! Long live Pollicent.

fearney · 02/04/2020 18:41

Just Polly is lovely. My friend named her baby Pollyanna, I thought it was a joke at first.
