A bit too out there?

Perfectly willing to accept that yes, maybe it is 🙈 Haven't has the nerve to bring it up to DH yet because I can predict his reaction...

I was driving along and the name October came to me, for a girl. I know a couple of people and celebs called January, and obviously there's April, May, June... My baby is due in October. I was thinking it's a bit like Ottilie and Octavia? Nicknames could be Ottie, Tobi?

Is this a really stupid name that my child would be embarrassed for life by? Would I be afraid to shout it in a supermarket? 🙈 Or does anyone else think it's the pretty and cool side of unusual?

I know an October. He’s about 7. People do often comment that they can guess his birthday etc 🙄
It’s not my choice but your child wouldn’t be the first to be called it.

userabcname · 29/02/2020 06:57

You could, I don't think it's too bad. I'd prefer Autumn for a baby girl born at that time of year though.

whymewhyme · 29/02/2020 06:58

Sorry but it's a no from me, when i think of the names april and may i don't think of the month assosiated to the name but i do with october.

EmotionalEllie · 29/02/2020 06:58

Yes, I'd go with Autumn.

Whywhywhynow · 29/02/2020 07:00

It’s okay. I think I could grow to like it, actually.

TwoFeets · 29/02/2020 07:15

I wouldn't use it personally but I'm not keen on using established words as names if that makes sense? But in this case I really don't like Otillie or Octavia either so the association doesn't help!

Picking a name is tricky, try to imagine introducing yourself to people as October - you could try it with strangers, would you be happy with that as your name?

My friend took her dog to a park just out of town and shouted any old name at him - if she wouldn't shout it or got funny looks she discounted it... The dog was Heaven-Leigh at one point which she realised sounded bloody ridiculous in her accent 🤣

ArizonaTrashBag · 29/02/2020 07:59

My friends daughter is October, she sometimes gets tobi for short. I like it!

Omashu · 29/02/2020 08:09

I actually quite like it! It’s one of those names I’d find off at first but grow to get used to very quickly. Like when I watched the latest season of ‘You’ and there were twins names Love and Forty... By the end of the season they sounded like completely normal names!

Omashu · 29/02/2020 08:09

find off = find odd

DoctorBambino · 29/02/2020 08:36

I like it but your comment about calling it out in the supermarket would put me off for sure!

PrednoLeucotropin · 29/02/2020 08:39

I don't like it. It's too awkward a word and the piss will be taken. I also think that if you are already thinking about shortening it so it sounds lesser, it's a no. Sorry.

PrednoLeucotropin · 29/02/2020 08:40

I do know an Oktoberon though but it's his middle name.

BuffaloCauliflower · 29/02/2020 08:42

October - Tobi for short works for me. But I also like Ottilie and Octavia so my brain seems to compute the same as yours! It is a bit out there, but as you say other months are used and if I knew a child with that name I’d get used to it pretty quickly

Doodlesquah1 · 29/02/2020 11:04

It’s lovely

RickOShay · 29/02/2020 11:05

Not really. Autumn is lovely though.

BadCatDirtyCat · 29/02/2020 11:08

It had a nice sound to it, although personally I am grateful for having a "boring" name so wouldn't choose to give such an unusual name to a child.

PhantomErik · 29/02/2020 11:13

I love Octavia (if born in October).

I really like the name Autumn but my DD was born in January so no good.

I know an April, a May & a June - all born in those months.

Sunshineand · 29/02/2020 11:31

Even if it wasn't the name of a month, I don't think as a sound it is nice. The K T B sounds. It's awkward, as a PP said.

FairytaleofBykerGrove · 29/02/2020 11:32

It’s cool

Milicentbystander72 · 29/02/2020 11:35

I love it and I'm not normally one for 'out there' names.

I think 'Tobi' or even 'Toba' for a nn is lovely.
My dd is 15 and she's often said she'd love a really stand out name at school Smile

Milicentbystander72 · 29/02/2020 11:36

I know a girl called Liberty (Libby) and a girl called Browne....I don't think it's any more unusual than that. I think it's cool.

PlantPotting · 29/02/2020 12:30

Autumn is lovely

Nowayorhighway · 29/02/2020 14:02

It’s not cool and it’s not like Octavia or Ottilie, both of those are classic names. I don’t like the other month names fwiw but October is just silly.

OhCaptain · 29/02/2020 14:04

I’d say the witty comments about guessing her birthday over the years would grate but it’s not awful!

Autumn is very pretty.

Boireannachlaidir · 29/02/2020 14:07

Poor kid. Just because some other months work as names (May, June) does not mean they all do. October is not unusual or different it's just stupid and there are far nicer names to choose from. But it's your child...so.
