I have a name which is always open to various nicknames and I find it irritating. As such, I am after a name for my daughter where you wouldn’t typically feel the need to shorten it. Can anyone think of any?

Scottish people used to get particularly upset about it so I guess it's uncommon there.

Ha! I'm Scottish but live in England. Thinking about it at school I can't think of any girl who was called a short form of their name, it never happened. DH has a 3 syllable name that was only shortened by other people when he moved to England. I call him a short form when talking to him but if I'm talking about him to someone else I'd always use his full name. So yes, I'd agree it is a very English thing to do.
