Names you wouldn’t shorten - girls

I have a name which is always open to various nicknames and I find it irritating. As such, I am after a name for my daughter where you wouldn’t typically feel the need to shorten it. Can anyone think of any?

I'm an Anna and I never get it shortened.

Girls I teach who do not get it shortened: Kira/Keira, Chloe, Beth, Amy, Ava, Ruby, Erin, Brooke, May/Mae, Alana, Niamh, Emma, Grace.

My daughter is Esther, she is 13 and no one has ever shortened it!

Doyoumind · 28/02/2020 21:21

I'm the kind of person who shortens names and I can find a short version of most of the names on here!

PoolsOfSunshineThroughTheGlass · 28/02/2020 21:28

My DD has one of the names mentioned here and as others have said it gets lengthened. I think nicknames are a sign of affection though so I don't mind (not that it's up to me) and neither does she. When she was little (from about 4 until about7) she was inseparable from her best friend and they both got called a merged version of both new by some of their friends!

Ds1 has a name you wouldn't have thought you could shorten and for some largely inexplicable reason his friends merged it with DC2s name and call him this new merged name, which dc1 is perfectly happy with!

DC2s name does shorten and his friends call him either his full name or a fairly obvious shortening.

I deliberately chose short names for my children but tbh I'm the worst for lengthening and rhyming them to produce nicknames, I don't seem to be able to help it! Blush

Claire. Without a doubt. It has no natural lengthenings or shortenings.

A close family member is Esther - or Est to the whole family!

fedup21 · 28/02/2020 21:35

The friends i had with short names ended up with friends lengthening them!!

PoolsOfSunshineThroughTheGlass · 28/02/2020 21:40

Shinygoldbauble although I know the sounds aren't quite the same (Clara not Claire), I'm sure determined nickname givers would give Clarabelle and Clarissa a whirl as lenthenings Wink - and if in doubt sometimes rhme names instead or as a lenthening... Claire-bear, Claire-the-hair (or hare - to Bunny WinkGrin)

Nicknames are sometimes quite distant from the original name.

Nicknames are sometimes quite distant from the original name.

This is so true. My nickname is Chew. My name is nothing close to Chew but has been shortened to that via a process of lengthening, rhyming and then shortening again.

Just off the top of my head.
Most names can be shortened if you really try, but there are names that are less likely to be...if that makes sense.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/02/2020 23:12

Be mindful of the fact that she may not thank you for giving her a nAme that no other option for her. Also most names can be shortened no matter how short they are or even lengthened. I'm Clare which obviously can't be shortened.
e.g. Ruby seems short enough, but it can easily become Ru,
Lily. Lil.
Kate Kay.
Ivy Iv

N ame s that may work for you.

You can shorten and/or lengthen literally any name. It's weirdly twee and controlling to try and police it. Let things be.

Are all girls I know whose names don't get shortened

Bumbers · 29/02/2020 10:15

I have a name that can't be shortened (mentioned on here several times) for the same reason (my Mum didn't want it shortened) - I find it really dull! Or worse, people add a rhyme to it, which I hate.

Fortunately I have an interesting surname so people call me a version of that!
