I'm expecting a second child and struggling with name ideas. Not sure of the gender yet but would like something unique that you don't find often. My husband is a botanist which is why we called our daughter Sequoiadendron (Sequoia for short!) and we're looking for something similar that's plant related.
Thanks in advance for the help fellow mums!! :)

I’m assuming this is a joke but I actually know a child called Sequoia

FuckPolitenessSSDGM · 25/02/2020 13:30

@sisyphusdad I relayed your comment to my husband. He was amused. I don't get it 😂😂

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2020 13:33

*Giant Redwood

Don't be silly, you can't call the brother the same as the sister.

Although when I came to enter a perfectly normally named pupil, James, for his GCSEs I discovered his full name was actually James Tiberius Kirk Surname. His parents were Trekkies
my son's name is James Bexley Lister Surname Blush

Double3xposure · 25/02/2020 13:51

@SiliconHeaven

Isn’t it Jim Bexley Lister?

JudyCoolibar · 25/02/2020 13:52

DBro is a lawyer. His children are called Prima Facie, Habias Corpus and Mens Rea.

catinb0oots · 25/02/2020 13:59

I like Douchecanoe

FreezerBird · 25/02/2020 14:02

I like Rhododendron, Rhoda for short.

Two people have suggested this. For the love of all that is good and pure, don't do it.

She'd be introduced as Rhoda (perfectly nice name) and throughout her childhood will get all the 'ooo rhododendron? Rhoda horse all the way here?' hilarity which is fairly easy to brush off, except the poor child would have to say 'actually, rhododendron is my name'.

GAH. No.

Abitofanexpert · 25/02/2020 14:04

We're lawyers and we've just gone with Lord and Lady for our two.

It has the double benefits of being themed, and it passes the 'can you imagine a high court judge with that name?' test. Why yes, yes I can.

Double3xposure · 25/02/2020 14:11

@Abitofanexpert With LJ for short, I assume ?

SageRosemary · 25/02/2020 14:26

Rosemary, after me
Rowan
Dandelion, shortened to Dan (or it's Latin name Taraxacum, shortened to Tara)
or call it after your MIL, Sansevieria trifasciata, Sandy for short
Lilium, Lily for short
Convallaria majalis - Connie for short
Rosa

WizardOfAus · 25/02/2020 14:30

Go with my favourite Latin plant name:

Rubus cockburnianus

Actually you can just put in latin botanical baby names in your search engine and the world's your oyster!

PleasantVille · 25/02/2020 15:07

I'm a world heavyweight champion, I found it easiest to call my 3 boys the same name Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2020 15:25

DH and I are both chemists, we missed out on so many good choices. Lots of options in the periodic table (Polonium, Mercury, Beryllium, Rubidium .... Not Silver except for dogs or horses though) before even getting to compounds - Ethylene sounds pretty.

Bluetrews25 · 25/02/2020 15:43

OP's not been back for a while.
Speaks volumes. Hmm

LonginesPrime · 25/02/2020 16:12

My husband is a botanist which is why we called our daughter Sequoiadendron (Sequoia for short!) and we're looking for something similar that's plant related

Hmm, that's a tough one - if only you had an expert to ask...

SiliconHeaven · 25/02/2020 16:17

@Double3xposuze absolutely, he prefers Jamie though 😀😀

Bloomburger · 25/02/2020 16:19

You're shitting me. You saddled you're kid with that name!!

BogOffJanuary · 25/02/2020 16:21

@Bloomburger thinking exactly the same!

Lavenderblues · 25/02/2020 17:15

Apparently Sequoia as a girl's name is of Cherokee origin meaning "sparrow"

HelgaHere1 · 25/02/2020 17:34

Isn't a sequoia a giant redwood tree.
