I'm expecting a second child and struggling with name ideas. Not sure of the gender yet but would like something unique that you don't find often. My husband is a botanist which is why we called our daughter Sequoiadendron (Sequoia for short!) and we're looking for something similar that's plant related.
Thanks in advance for the help fellow mums!! :)

I'm a physiotherapist, so mine are called Scaphoid (NN Scaff) and Pisiform (NN Pi).
DH was working in TV and film at the time wanted to call them Bafta and Emmy, but they were boys, so I won.

You seem to like trees....
Araucaria araucana could perhaps work for both?
(Monkey Puzzle Tree)

FamilyOfAliens · 25/02/2020 12:22

Isn’t a Sequoia a large, thick tree with a very wide trunk?

DonKeyshot · 25/02/2020 12:23

Sequoia has Native American connotations and it's shame the new name has to be plant related as that rules out Pocohontas, Mitena, Sacajawea, Olathe, Chenoa, and many others, but Aiyana means 'forever flowering' Of course, if it's a boy Geronimo, Sitting Bull, or Powhatan might suit as would Dances With Wolves. Smile

Perhaps Liriodendron with or without tulipifera or Cerciscanadensis would be more to your taste with Acerrubron or Cornusflorida for a boy?

Take no notice of the naysayers, OP. Narrow minds are a natural breeding ground for contempt and there's always the odd keyboard warrior who write things they'd never dream of saying to your face. That said, some of the responses have given me cause to chuckle.

FakeFraudSquad · 25/02/2020 12:23

Must have been a big baby @FamilyOfAliens, hence the name #ouch

If your first child is the largest tree in the world then the second child will need to be called Pennantia Baylisiana, obvs.

Although Grondagronda Aspidistra is an absolute classic, that was a thing of joy to see suggested.
