How would you spell this nickname

Hello,

My baby daughter is called Genevieve (mn Grace).

While we use her full name a lot, she also gets called Vivi (pronounced Vee-Vee), as my sons and DH like this... my intention was to cal her either Vivi or Evie, but Vivi seems to have stuck!

However, the spelling of this nn seems to have caused confusion, with family members referring to her as Viv-i, which I hate. I’ve taken to spelling it Veevie... does this look a bit weird/inelegant? Any better ways to spell it? Vivie? Vievie?

Also, which do you prefer as a nickname... Veevie or Evie? Some family members have said they dislike the nickname Vivi full stop (and said quite rude things about it!) which has upset me...

I love Vivi if you hate that spelling I'd say vivie was the only other that looks right written down

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/02/2020 10:50

Vevie

Omashu · 23/02/2020 10:51

First off sod whatever anyone else thinks about Vivi! If you like it then tell them to stop being so rude.

As for spelling, I’m not too sure. Vivi looks the nicest and I think you’ll end with people pronouncing it wrong no matter how you write it. People might pronounce Vievie to rhyme with eye.

dementedpixie · 23/02/2020 10:52

Surely different people can use different nicknames. IMO Nicknames evolve and arent chosen in advance.

Meltedicicle · 23/02/2020 10:52

I love Vivi. There’s a little girl on teen mom with that name and spelling.

dementedpixie · 23/02/2020 10:55

She might end up as Ginny or Vee to friends, for example

Brevityisthesoulofwit · 23/02/2020 10:55

I would either stick with Vivi or given that it comes from the “vieve” part of her name the Vievie might also work.

Given that her nickname will be said more than it’s written I think those pronouncing it Viv-i are probably being deliberately obtuse.

SaltedCaroMel · 23/02/2020 10:56

Genevieve is lovely.

Vivi, I think.

Family needs to back off and butt out.

BrutusMcDogface · 23/02/2020 10:58

Vivi for sure. I taught a little Vivi!

BrutusMcDogface · 23/02/2020 10:59

I think she might change it to VV as a teen; my friend Katie became KT 🤣

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/02/2020 11:01

If I saw Vivi I would assume the pronunciation ‘vee-vee’. Your family are being rude, they don’t get to decide her name. It’s a lovely nm for Genevieve, which is also lovely. Much nicer than Evie which is done to death.

Peachbubble · 23/02/2020 13:10

Love Vivi as a nickname. I'd keep the spelling as that.

ememem84 · 23/02/2020 13:27

I went to school with a Genevieve. We knew her as genny.

That said I’d probably use vivi

TheReluctantCountess · 23/02/2020 13:29

I’d spell it as ViVi.

Arseit · 23/02/2020 13:30

ViVi - way nicer than Evie.

DoYouRememberTheInnMiranda · 23/02/2020 13:31

I knew a VV at uni.

Rosalo · 23/02/2020 14:25

Anyone saying viv i is being deliberately obtuse.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/02/2020 14:27

Why are people suggesting putting a capital V in the middle of the name? That’s not how English works.

user1493494961 · 23/02/2020 15:07

Think Evie is much nicer.

flowery · 23/02/2020 15:11

”Anyone saying viv i is being deliberately obtuse.“

Confused If I saw Vivi written down I would absolutely pronounce it with a short i sound as the second letter. I would not be being obtuse. The name Vivien isn’t pronounced Veevien.

Rosalo · 23/02/2020 15:16

So you'd say Viv eye? @flowery

I can't imagine anyone not saying vi vi

Ninkanink · 23/02/2020 15:18

That’s not what op means - she means viv-ee.

Ninkanink · 23/02/2020 15:19

@Rosalo, that is.

flowery · 23/02/2020 15:22

”So you'd say Viv eye?”

Er, no, that would be weird. I’d say vivvy. Based on the first two syllables of the name Vivien being pronounced that way, as I said.

OP wants it pronounces veevie though- “I’ve taken to spelling it Veevie.”

Ninkanink · 23/02/2020 15:22

I would definitely say viv-ee until I was made aware. That’s just how it works with commonly accepted names/nicknames, people will presume according to conventions and rules. I would probably just write it as Vee, and call her Veevee.
