I have a boy called Sebastian and 'Id love to call my girl Isabelle. Would you automatically think of Belle and Sebastian; either the cartoon or the band? My husband is not a big music fan or knows the cartoon but can't help thinking people might think I'm a mega fan. 😂 I enjoyed their music in my youth.

If you said Belle and Sebastian in that order I'd think of the band but prob not if the other way round or a variation of either. But I think they're lovely names.

overthinkingismymiddlename · 22/02/2020 18:36

We call my boy Seb and the girl probably Issy.

I'm in my 30s and a big fan of both cartoon and band. I named my child after someone far more obscure and still get the "oh, as in....?" question regularly. Doesn't bother me as they are actually named after them. Might bother you as it's not your intention.

TheDogsMother · 22/02/2020 18:40

I'm older and I think of tv programme about orphan Sebastian and his St Bernard dog Belle, in the Alps. I doubt many people will make that connection though and they are lovely names.

RuffleCrow · 22/02/2020 18:54

And i've always thought naming babies after someone still living (or the band of people still living) is a huge risk because you never quite know what they might do to tarnish their reps! I'm sure Stuart Murdoch et al are lovely, but still.

BabloHoney · 22/02/2020 20:12

I would think band but I’d think it was cool! If you love the name I’d go for it

FennyBridges · 22/02/2020 20:18

We would have done exactly that if my second was a girl.

Do it. It's fab.

YouKnowWhoo · 22/02/2020 20:21

In my 40s, I’d think of the band, in a really nice way Smile

myrtleWilson · 22/02/2020 20:22

@overthinkingismymiddlename how awesome - In that case you should definitely go for the names - what a brilliant connection to your past!

Bubbinsmakesthree · 22/02/2020 20:26

To be honest most people will either not have heard of the band or be fans of the band, so will either not bat an eyelid or think it’s kinda cool. But be prepared for lots of people trying to engage you in conversation about Tigermilk and the Boy with the Arab Strap...it might get a bit wearing if you’re not actually fans!

midsomermurderess · 22/02/2020 20:27

Absolutely the band.

ohnooutofdateham · 22/02/2020 22:07

I would think of the band but that's not a bad thing.

"Take a walk in the park...."

Ohyesiam · 22/02/2020 22:09

It sounded vaguely familiar, but really cool too.

Smellslikebiscuits · 22/02/2020 22:14

I did meet a Bella and Sebastian on holiday once, thought it was very cool, and asked if they were named after the band... apparently not!

toomuchteaandcake · 22/02/2020 22:40

I'd definitely think of the band but not in a bad way!

AmazingGreats · 22/02/2020 22:41

Yes I'd think of the band, but I do listen to them a fair bit not everybody would

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/02/2020 22:44

Thedogsmother I'm with you. Was that the programme with the Snowy white horses song ?

Snooks1971 · 22/02/2020 22:46

Band too
But I’m envious I didn’t think of it first
The ultimate coolest names ever
And both timeless!
Not many people who you meet at Baby Groups will have heard of B&S as a group, and if they have.... they will be friends for life Grin

FelicityFebruary · 22/02/2020 22:50

I'd think of a cute little boy and his big fluffy dog up in the mountains. Live action not cartoon.

It would be fine though.

InTheWalls · 22/02/2020 22:51

I like the band and would think of them. Would think you were some sort of super fan. Not sure I would use the names together.

Willow2017 · 22/02/2020 22:55

I'd think of the black and white Belgian tv programme dubbed into English
Me too loved that programme i wanted one of those dogs! Still.remember the theme tune.😁

TheDogsMother it wasnt a St Bernard! Its a Pyrenees😀

Isabelle is a lovely name op just do what suits you. I knew an Issy great nickname.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/02/2020 23:03

I would get really tongue tied around your house cos I'd be singing The boy with the Arab Strap ALL the TIME. But if you're cool with that and would say 'go on Lonny, let it out' then that's OK. If you'd get humphy with the reference, then don't do it.

And don't move to Glasgow.

notacooldad · 22/02/2020 23:03

I would assume you loved the band and think it was a bit odd to be honest.

JJPC · 22/02/2020 23:04

I’d think you were big Disney fans. No idea on the band.

Dollywilde · 22/02/2020 23:04

Would definitely think of the band but would agree it’s cool rather than excessively fan girl Grin
