We were blessed with a baby girl almost 3(!) weeks ago and still haven’t settled on a name. Her sex was a surprise but it’s still not excuse...

I think we have come down to two contenders:

Rosanna and Alexandra

Any pros and cons for either?

DH is struggling with Rosie as a nn, and tbh, I’m not 100% sure how I feel about the nn as I know a few Rosies (who are all lovely, but a bit close to home). Is it a bit feminine or out there?

I’ve always loved Alexandra but is Alex (Jackson, for example) a bit “frequently met with”?

Any opinions are very much welcome!

I've got a Rose....I still get irritated when people call her Rosie...which is ALL the time....teachers do it, her friends do it...neighbours...she doesn't mind though so that's the main thing.

I like Rosanna a lot but she will get Rosie. I think Alexandra is lovely but will get Alex...and Allie...which aren't nearly as nice.

On balance, I think Rosanna is nicer and Rosie is nicer than Alex...but longer names always get shortened.

Puddlelane123 · 22/02/2020 04:06

I think Rosanna is beautiful, and by no means a given that she would automatically become a ‘Rosie’. I definitely prefer it of the two and think that whilst similar in length to Alexandra it flows better so less likely to be shortened. I think if you pick Alexandra you would have to be prepared for some shortening to evolve. Say to Lexie?

Taddda · 22/02/2020 04:12

I quite like Alexandra shortening to Lexi, I love Rosanna, I'd think that more likely to be shortened to Rosa than Rosie?

Are you thinking any middle names Op?

chrestomamci · 22/02/2020 04:13

Burn beautiful but I think I slightly prefer Rosanna. It's a friends wife's name and I've always thought it's beautiful. She goes by Rosa or Ana

HeronLanyon · 22/02/2020 04:13

I like both full names a lot.
I prefer Rosie to Alex.
Congrats op.

Astronica · 22/02/2020 04:36

I much prefer Alexandra. I like the full name more than Alex though, and like other Alexandra nns such as Xandra, Andy, Annie, Lexa, Xan.

I love Rose and Rosie but not so keen on Rosanna.

Whatsyourflava · 22/02/2020 07:39

I love Rosanna - go with that!

BikeRunSki · 22/02/2020 07:44

I prefer Alexandra, nn Sandy, Lexi.

Peachbubble · 22/02/2020 07:57

I prefer Rosanna

Aria20 · 22/02/2020 08:01

Prefer Rosanna and you could shorten to Rosa or Anna instead of Rosie.

Ellmau · 22/02/2020 09:51

Both great names. I would say Rosanna is a bit prettier and Alexandra a bit stronger sounding.

You could call Rosanna Zanna or Zannie for short if you liked that better.

Singingatmidnight · 22/02/2020 10:35

I prefer Alexandra, I'd call her Alex or Ally.

userabcname · 22/02/2020 10:39

Ooh I like both. I quite like the suggestion of Zannie for Rosanna or Xan for Alexandra. I'd probably go for Alexandra if you really really don't like Rosie since I'm not sure you could avoid others calling her that. Congratulations by the way!

Wintersun13 · 22/02/2020 10:41

Both names are nice so you can't go wrong.

I actually like Alexandra less, purely on account of how common and popular it is (still a great name though !)
I do like the Alex or Lexie nicknames.

Rosanna is great and less common but Rosie, urgh. Would you consider Roshanna or Roxana ? That would solve the Rosie issue (you'll still get Rosh or Rox of course, but I like those much better than Rosie !)

I'd still pick Rosanna over Alexandra but the Rosie nickname would annoy me to no end.

Please let us know what you decide in the end !

Wintersun13 · 22/02/2020 10:42

PS - congratulations on the birth of your baby girl !

Hamptonbishop1111 · 22/02/2020 12:00

I love Rosanna and Alexandra but really dislike Rosie and Alex. It’s not a given though that you’ll have to use a nn

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2020 13:15

Rosanna is my favourite of the two, but I like Alexandra as well.

Rosie isn't inevitable as a diminutive, others on here have suggested lots of alternatives.

Nightsofthunder · 22/02/2020 13:49

I went to school with a Rosanna. She was always Roz, never called Rosie.

Flymetothestars · 22/02/2020 15:01

Rosanna - love it!

JustForTheTasteOfIt · 22/02/2020 15:02

Do you like Rosa? That's a lovely name and might be an alternative if you're not keen on Rosie. Which is also a lovely name IMO!

GaraMedouar · 22/02/2020 16:40

Rosanna is lovely - Roz or Zanna for short

TatianaLarina · 22/02/2020 16:45

Rosanna and Alexandra are very pretty.

Rosanna will get called Rosie, so I guess it depends how you feel about that.

Much prefer Alex to Sandy or Lexi. Lexi is a stripper name.

TatianaLarina · 22/02/2020 16:46

Yes I like Rosa. You can call her that at home but you can’t control what her friends call her so it will depend on what she likes.

Tinty · 22/02/2020 16:49

How about Rosabelle with Belle as a nickname ?

Or Alexandra nn Lexie

Tinty · 22/02/2020 16:51

My DS’s friend is Rosabelle and she has only ever been full name or Belle.
