We were blessed with a baby girl almost 3(!) weeks ago and still haven’t settled on a name. Her sex was a surprise but it’s still not excuse...

I think we have come down to two contenders:

Rosanna and Alexandra

Any pros and cons for either?

DH is struggling with Rosie as a nn, and tbh, I’m not 100% sure how I feel about the nn as I know a few Rosies (who are all lovely, but a bit close to home). Is it a bit feminine or out there?

I’ve always loved Alexandra but is Alex (Jackson, for example) a bit “frequently met with”?

Any opinions are very much welcome!

Really no contest for me. Rosanna is a bit twee and slightly dull somehow. Alexandra is classy, elegant, timeless and beautiful, with several lovely nn options. I think you can see which one I think you should choose!

Prefer Rosanna

MikeUniformMike · 22/02/2020 19:55

Please don't call her Lexi. I don't like Rosabelle at all

Rosanna and Alexandra are both lovely.
Alexandra is probably more of a classic, but I know a lot of people called Alex, so Rosanna seems more unusual.

Not particularly helpful, but I love Rosalind.
Rose and Rosie are both pretty nn, and I also like Ros.

ilovemykids5 · 22/02/2020 21:29

How about Roxanne

Tillygetsit · 23/02/2020 01:13

I wanted Rosanna for dd1. Compromised with Susannah. It's so lovely. Alexandra always sounds a bit spiky to me.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 23/02/2020 02:03

Alexandra Rose?

TeetotalKoala · 23/02/2020 02:13

Rosanna is so pretty and not one you hear often. She might not end up having a nickname. DS1 has a long name, but never uses the short. Think Samuel/Sam (not the name). We picked his name because we didn't mind the short version, but it never felt natural to call him that.
He's halfway through primary school now, and occasionally someone at school will call him 'Sam' but he's mostly known as 'Samuel'. When he was a toddler, he used to correct people. 'I'm NOT Sam, I'm SAMUEL!'.

Congratulations!

I can see your dilemma...

They're both nice names but honestly, you're looking at your DD almost certainly being Rosie or Alex by the time they're in school. If you don't like the idea of that, find another name - honestly. I don't like either of those short forms tbh.

They're really quite different types of names so that tells me that it's likely you will be able to find something else.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 23/02/2020 11:54

I love Alexandra, absolutely gorgeous and can be Lexi if you don't like Alex....

SVDW1136 · 23/02/2020 14:47

Thank you guys for all your opinions and options 😊

I think we’re going to go with Rosanna! For the following reasons:

Lots of nn options;
It’s a rarer name than Alexandra;
Goes well with our surname and lifts it a bit (we are a Smith/Jackson type surname);
Goes nicely with her big brother’s name;
I’ve been calling her Rosanna the last day or two and my husband seems to have really taken to it, even confirmed her name to some friends (this is massive progress); and
She feels more like a Rosanna than Alexandra.

I hope we’ve made the right decision, naming a human is tough.

Thanks again, everyone xx

Rosanna is beautiful. I know one (adult) and she’s lovely. She does abbreviate it to Rosie thought (which I really like tbh). Love Rosa as well.

Congratulations!

AlpacaGoodnight · 24/02/2020 23:05

Really like Roseanna and like the idea of Rosa as a nickname!

AlpacaGoodnight · 24/02/2020 23:06

Rosanna- stupid autocorrect!

LarkDescending · 25/02/2020 00:08

Lovely choice - congratulations!

Taddda · 25/02/2020 04:10

Rosanna is beautiful, congrats OP!

brackengirl · 25/02/2020 20:47

My 9 year old daughter is Rosanna and she loves her name; she does get called Rosie at school but I always use Rosanna and she happily switches between the two. I've had loads of compliments on her name and still love it just as much as when we chose it!

Bol87 · 27/02/2020 21:30

With NN, express your opinion now. When we announced the birth of our daughter, we said her full name with the caveat of affectionately known as NN. Our DD’s name lends itself to a few NN and we specifically chose one. She’s never had any other NN used by anyone as we’ve been quite forceful with our use of it! Smile

WishUponAStar88 · 27/02/2020 21:31

Rosanna!

WishUponAStar88 · 27/02/2020 21:32

Oops I only saw the first page. Definitely the nicer name it’s beautiful Smile

guineapig1 · 27/02/2020 21:36

They are both lovely names, but nicknames in particular are hard to predict. I have a good friend called Rosanna who goes by Anna and know another who is often called Rosa. I know several Alexandras who go by variations of Alex, Alexa, Ally etc

guineapig1 · 27/02/2020 21:37

And an Alexandra called Lexie too come to think of it
