Thoughts on Buddy?

Hi everyone! Hubby and I found out a few weeks ago we're having a baby boy. We have always both loved the name Buddy. My only concern is what would other people think? I know I shouldn't but I can't help but ponder what people's perceptions will be of him as it's quite unusual and we've had quite extreme reactions from some family x

It makes me think of Elf.

GoldLeafTree · 04/02/2020 20:40

Reminds me of Buddy the Elf

ButterflyBitch · 04/02/2020 20:41

Not a name is it?

Tombakersscarf · 04/02/2020 20:41

Nickname

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/02/2020 20:42

Fine if you’re having an elf. Or a dog.

ChickLitLover · 04/02/2020 20:43

I think it’s nice as a nickname but I wouldn’t use it as his actual name. Think of the teenage years at secondary school, it’s him not you that will potentially get teased.

Also it seems to be a very popular name for dogs around here. Sorry

JKScot4 · 04/02/2020 20:43

It’s the 4th most popular dogs name, I know lots of them. How about Pal? Matey? Chum?

Igottastartthinkingbee · 04/02/2020 20:45

I know a 5 year old Buddy. He’s ace. He has very cool artistic parents though so I’d expect him to have a cool name.

wishingitwasfriday · 04/02/2020 20:45

I know lots, but they're all dogs! It's a nickname at best but definitely not a full name for a little boy, who will one day grow up to be a man.

LouisaJenny · 04/02/2020 20:47

I’m not so keen. I know a kid called Buddy, it does really suit him but what about when he’s an adult, or in senior school.

I think it’s cute for a baby/toddler, but not for growing up n

firstimemamma · 04/02/2020 20:50

I swear to god I suggested this name to my fiancé today for when we get our first dog.

Buddy might seem cute for a child but you need to think of the bigger picture - children grow up and will probably want to be taken seriously as adults. It's a no from me, sorry.

Wifeofbikerviking · 04/02/2020 20:52

I'm not sold on buddy for a baby. I've recently got a new pet rabbit and called him Buddy 😬

eggandonion · 04/02/2020 20:52

My Dd1 has a friend called Buddy, Bernard on his birthday certificate.

Pineaurouge · 04/02/2020 20:53

Gosh no.... buddy the elf is the first thing anyone will think!

SoftBlocks · 04/02/2020 20:55

No.

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2020 20:56

It's a bit nicknamey, but you both like it, so why not.

Ginbauble · 04/02/2020 20:56

My first thoughts were:

It's American slang for friend.

And an elf.

And the name of one of Jamie Oliver's kids.

Sorry, I don't like it as a name.

AlpacaGoodnight · 04/02/2020 21:03

Love it! Always makes me think of Buddy Holly, followed by the movie Elf

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 04/02/2020 21:12

It's great for a dog!

SueEllenMishke · 04/02/2020 21:14

It's what I call my DS as a nickname. Doesn't feel like an actual name

daisypond · 04/02/2020 21:56

No.

Whatsyourflava · 04/02/2020 21:56

I know this name isn’t popular on here but in real life it’s becoming much more mainstream and popular. It really wouldn’t sound out of place at all at my local nursery. People might raise an eyebrow but there’ll be doing that for loads of the names in the class these days

AudacityOfHope · 04/02/2020 22:00

I call my son Buddy quite often, in the same way I'd call him pal or darling, etc, but I also gave him an actual name.

RLOU30 · 04/02/2020 22:03

🐶
