Thoughts on Buddy?

Hi everyone! Hubby and I found out a few weeks ago we're having a baby boy. We have always both loved the name Buddy. My only concern is what would other people think? I know I shouldn't but I can't help but ponder what people's perceptions will be of him as it's quite unusual and we've had quite extreme reactions from some family x

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Poppydaisies · 05/02/2020 14:54

There were 140 babies last year named Buddy and the name is on the up.

That's a lot! I bet there were also lots of similar cutesy names, like Teddy.

Mamabear88 · 05/02/2020 17:26

Elf

Charis1503 · 05/02/2020 19:22

@AudacityOfHope

I agree Sonny is also pretty dire.... but atleast the child would have the option of harriSON or a grown up name when they got older. It kinda bridges the gap between wanting a cute name for a baby but the fall back of an adult name when older...

Mollie3 · 05/02/2020 19:28

Actually yes I’d agree it’s cute but think of when he’s older
Bud? That’s an alcoholic drink tho.
Call him a name beginning with B such as
Blake
Benjamin
Blaine
Sorry that is all I can think of ATM!
And use Buddy as a kid name when actually his really name, is well, as a previous poster suggests, a real name.
Sorted 👍

BennytheBall · 05/02/2020 19:30

Absolutely awful.

Imagine a poor adult being saddled with that silly name because his feckless parents thought it cute.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 05/02/2020 19:40

Shock Confused

Instead, how about thinking of other abbreviations you like, (such as Buddy), but put a proper, longer name on their birth certificate that they will be able to use in later life (when they want to be prime-minister (although that's probably a bad example looking at the current PM - I think you could get that job even if you were called 'Dafty-the-Dim-Witted-Dim-Bat').

So, you could use Buddy as his everyday name, but put Bernard on his birth certificate?

Or, if you don't like Bernard, here are some other similar-sounding suggestions -

Barney, short for Barnabas?
Or Teddy, short for Edward?
Or Bertie, short for Albert?
Or Bertie, short for Cuthbert?
Or Ernie short for Ernest?

Elf or dog
Poor child doesn't stand a chance

20CMB20 · 05/02/2020 19:43

I've never heard of Buddy the Elf.

Why don't you just go for a real name, and call your DS "Buddy" as an affectionate name, in the way that people might use "sweetheart" or other terms of endearment? (Not as a nickname, just as a pet name).

Beautiful3 · 05/02/2020 19:43

Buddy the elf....dont do it!

TrippingOnSunshine · 05/02/2020 19:59

If Buddy is a name that you and your husband have always loved then use it! Who cares what others think they've got their opinions but it's up to you!
Imagine if in a few years time there are a few Buddys at your son's school, will you be gutted you didn't have the guts to use it??

BobbyBlueCat · 05/02/2020 21:42

It's a nickname.

Or a pet's name.

Horrid.

Bunnyfuller · 05/02/2020 21:46

Elf

kpdiscodancer · 05/02/2020 21:51

I met a child on holiday once- they were a lovely family who chatted to everyone they met. The first thing they said to everyone was "Buddy is his name, not his nickname. You can call him Buddy too." I got the distinct impression they wished they had just used it as a nickname. Hope that helps.

Neolara · 05/02/2020 21:58

It's awful. It's like not bothering to give him an actual name

AudacityOfHope · 05/02/2020 22:12

This is one of those threads where I think if the OP loves it so much perhaps they should change their name to it, and see how that goes.

Dandelion1993 · 05/02/2020 22:14

Buddy is a dogs name.

GroggyLegs · 05/02/2020 22:24

Twee.

Astronica · 05/02/2020 23:10

I get that there is a strong trend at the moment to use nickname style names as the full name, and some I like much more than others. Buddy as a name is one I don't like. I sometimes call my grandson Buddy, but he has a name as well. Pick any name for him and use Buddy as a nickname.

IrishPeaches · 05/02/2020 23:23

OP, in defence of Buddy which is getting a lot of flack... I happen to know two baby Buddy's! One of which is my godson - at first I wasn't sure but it now really suits them both and it just seems normal. If you love the name go for it. A grown up Buddy of the future will have friends called all sorts of weird and wonderful names as our generation is choosing so many unusual ones nowadays - I really don't see the big deal! X

happycamper11 · 06/02/2020 07:02

Imagine as an adult introducing himself in a professional/corporate environment as Buddy. I definitely wouldn't, use it as a nickname. Mine is affectionately Known as Bear to me and answers to it.

Maduixa · 06/02/2020 07:03

I feel the same way about this as I feel about my (French) DP's suggestion to name a baby boy Guy. It may very well have a noble pedigree and work in certain times and places, but maybe not so well in 2020+ UK/world.

Buddy can be a nickname for almost anything. Pick a real name, and call your little guy Buddy if you like.

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 06/02/2020 07:04
