Thoughts on Buddy?

Hi everyone! Hubby and I found out a few weeks ago we're having a baby boy. We have always both loved the name Buddy. My only concern is what would other people think? I know I shouldn't but I can't help but ponder what people's perceptions will be of him as it's quite unusual and we've had quite extreme reactions from some family x

Why are people ok with Teddy but not Buddy?

mathanxiety · 05/02/2020 07:13

It's American slang for 'friend' that was originally the Irish for penis.

Yestermost · 05/02/2020 07:15

I have a weird name but woukd be embarrassed to introduce myself as Buddy.

Strugglingtodomybest · 05/02/2020 07:20

That's really interesting, I never knew that!

Anyway, my first thought is Elf and second is a dog.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 05/02/2020 07:24

Ok if you are an elf.

blondiebrowneyes · 05/02/2020 07:32

All I think of is Buddy the elf so it's a no from me.

Not everybody is, unless it's a bear being named. Until recently, I always assumed that anyone called Teddy had Edward on their birth certificate.

PhoneLock · 05/02/2020 07:43

Buddy is silly. Why not call him Mate instead?

lljkk · 05/02/2020 07:47

Buddy is a nickname for Edward (I was told).
I went to school with a 'Buddy' (1970s America).

SaintFlamingo · 05/02/2020 07:47

It's fine. For a dog

Poppydaisies · 05/02/2020 07:48

Teddy and Buddy are nicknames for Edward?

Doyoumind · 05/02/2020 07:49

No, no, no.

AuntieMarys · 05/02/2020 07:50

Awful. And it's the name of NSPCC mascot.

fishonabicycle · 05/02/2020 07:54

Cute for a dog or elf.

Chocolatedaim · 05/02/2020 07:56

I call my 5mnth old buddy, it’s just a nn, but I feel real affection towards it.
Name your child what you want!

20viona · 05/02/2020 07:56

Dogs name

MyuMe · 05/02/2020 07:57

Buddy Bear Oliver ....Jamie Oliver's son.

Better suited to a pet.

But maybe you like twee seeing as you call your husband hubby.

bluebluezoo · 05/02/2020 07:59

I met a buddy once.

Took me several weeks to figure out it was his actual name and not his mum using an affectionate nickname- “come on buddy, lets go....

You might as well call him friend, mate, darling, love, pet, duck (if you’re going regional) etc.

AdaFromYorkshire · 05/02/2020 08:02

I think as an adult he'd prefer a proper name.

PineappleDanish · 05/02/2020 08:02

Fabulous name - for a Labrador.

midsomermurderess · 05/02/2020 08:11

Isn't it the cute dog in Doc Martin?

Whatsyourflava · 05/02/2020 10:38

@firsttimeivfmum you’d think reading this thread that Buddy is the most obscure name imaginable. There were 140 babies last year named Buddy and the name is on the up. 650 babies named Sonny last year.

I think it’s a nice name and you should do for it. Honestly there’s so many kinds of names around now, there will be far more unusual names in his class at school (for people to raise eyebrows at).

AudacityOfHope · 05/02/2020 11:26

I think Sonny is equally dreadful tbh.

OverthinkingThis · 05/02/2020 11:44

Yep. I'm picturing a civil servant named Buddy Confused

Strugglingtoquit · 05/02/2020 11:59

Elf or dog, not human

I also don’t like Sonny or Teddy fwiw. Teddy is ok as a nickname but not as a full name for a human
