Thoughts on Buddy?

Hi everyone! Hubby and I found out a few weeks ago we're having a baby boy. We have always both loved the name Buddy. My only concern is what would other people think? I know I shouldn't but I can't help but ponder what people's perceptions will be of him as it's quite unusual and we've had quite extreme reactions from some family x

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Istillgetjealous · 04/02/2020 22:06

The elf or a dog/cat
Can you really imagine a grown man named Buddy?!

NearLifeExperience · 04/02/2020 22:07

It’s a dogs name. I know two canine Buddies.

It’s ridiculous for a child.

AhoyMrBeaver · 04/02/2020 22:09

Imagine trying to be taken seriously and having to introduce yourself as Buddy.

Babypug · 04/02/2020 22:09

That's our boys name (with our surname especially it's a strong name so no pressure!)
Couldn't care what other people think because we love it.
I know it's a usual name in America, don't think they get judged there?!
Remember it's your baby and your choice - have fun with picking out names.

Buddy Holly's real name was Charles, so it was a nickname. I agree with pp, give your child an actual name.

DramaAlpaca · 04/02/2020 22:11

Nope. Not good.

But your baby, your choice.

Charis1503 · 04/02/2020 22:15

Awful choice for a baby. Imagine him doing a sensible profession... "hi my name is Buddy, Buddy the brain surgeon"

How about Sonny? Then on birth certificate could be DawSON, HarriSON, ElliSON... you get me

villamariavintrapp · 04/02/2020 22:17

I think it goes well with Hubby. Is that your husband's name? Otherwise no.

@villamariavintrapp - hahaha. Actually laughed out loud

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/02/2020 22:21

Did you mean to put this in the pets topic?

Charis1503 · 04/02/2020 22:21

@Strawberrypancakes

Call him Budwiser?! Haha

Whyisitsodifficult · 04/02/2020 22:21

Yep it’s a dogs name, I know about 4!

MirandaGoshawk · 04/02/2020 22:24

Give him a proper name and call him Buddy as a nickname, if you must.

Caselgarcia · 04/02/2020 22:26

He's going to grow up into an adult. How do you feel about a 40 year old called Buddy?

Whatsyourflava · 04/02/2020 22:33

Yeh but the thing is this 40 year old “Buddy” will be 40 at the same time as 40 year old “Sonny” (a top 100 name by the way- literally hundreds being born each year!) and for example 40 year old “Albie” (a top 50 name) and “Hunter” (a top 50 name)....and a whole host of other names that were unheard of for our generation but getting increasingly popular now (there’s a Fox, Wolf at our local nursery). “BuT THoSe aRE aniMALs” - so what! Names have gone a bit rogue these days. Buddy might have the most boring name in his class 🤣

MiniGuinness · 04/02/2020 22:38

Is it short for Chabuddy? I love that, Buddy on its own is a bit boring though.

turnedabout · 04/02/2020 22:50

Agree with other posters, give him a name and make Buddy the nickname,

Robert can be Buddy rather than Bobby

Buddy is cute for a little kid but no good got when he's older and wants to be taken seriously in the professional world,

Imagine the country's leading criminal barrister being called Buddy...

Poppydaisies · 04/02/2020 23:02

It's a little cutesy but not different to some of the other cutesy names used for boys these days eg Teddy!

Ohyesiam · 04/02/2020 23:04

Too cute.

AdriannaP · 04/02/2020 23:05

Please don’t

BackforGood · 04/02/2020 23:09

Don't.

Buddy, as in Buddy Holly was a nickname.
Buddy, in Elf ?

Give the little boy a proper name, for his sake.

Bol87 · 04/02/2020 23:10

It’s fine. It does remind me of Elf though.

Jamie Oliver has a Buddy as does Tom Fletcher.. but he also has a Buzz, so I don’t go much for his taste in names 😂

People always worry about adulthood but c’mon. If your child wants to be a brain surgeon & is clever enough, his name won’t hold him back. Nor will it stop him being a lawyer or a teacher or cleaner etc..! In a previous job, I kid you not, I worked with a Gaynor Dick (maiden name). Everyone called her Gay.. she was head of entire office. 🤷🏼‍♀️

blackice · 04/02/2020 23:12

Please, please don't.

paperandfireworks · 05/02/2020 00:31

Only for a dog.
