Juno, Matilda, Phoebe, Anna

I’m due very soon with our first DD (DC2) and we have struggled with names throughout the pregnancy (which is annoying, as naming DS was easy!). As per the thread title our top four are as follows, with a likely middle name of Elizabeth:

Juno - my personal favourite, DH not quite so keen. The (very) limited pool of people I’ve tried it out on have been a bit ‘meh’ about it and said they just think of the film. But is that really going to be a ‘thing’ as she’s growing up?!

Matilda - both like. I am not keen on Mattie or Tilly though, which puts me off a bit as I know you can’t really control nicknames - especially as they get older.

Phoebe - like but not sure I love. Not sure it goes well with our surname, which is also two syllables and has an ‘eee’ sound so the names would assonate (think ‘Phoebe Stevens’ - not actual name).

Anna - classic and lovely sounding but still not sure. Sounds a bit elegant and formal for a baby. Would Annie work as a nickname do you think?

We’ve deliberately kept from discussing names with friends and family so I’m really keen for honest feedback on our list.

Other name suggestions very welcome (although I think we may know every girl’s name in the world now 😆). Thanks!

Anna nn Annie would be lovely.

NickMyLipple · 22/01/2020 22:05

I love all your names and I have a Harriet. Middle name was very nearly Elizabeth but I went for Alice at the very last minute!

Swinesinsleepingbags · 22/01/2020 22:07

Agree Anna nn Annie is gorgeous and underused. I know a few Junos and I'm sorry I still don't get it, I always think it sounds like an Aldi own brand nappy

Tatum1234 · 22/01/2020 22:07

Juno is lovely, much nicer than the others which are a bit too popular for me.

ShowOfHands · 22/01/2020 22:08

I love love love Annie. A favourite aunt was Annie Miriam.

DD is a Mathilda and has never ever been anything but Mathilda. Her friends (teens) sometimes call her Tilda but she is not and never will be Mattie or Tilly.

MrsBertBibby · 22/01/2020 22:08

Anna, it's a fabulous name. Unpretentious, straightforward, friendly, yet elegant and stylish. Beautiful

Phoebe is very nice indeed.

Juno is a bit faddy, and she's a bastard of a goddess.

Matilda : horrid, and she will get Tilly which is even worse.

adviceneededon · 22/01/2020 22:15

I have a Phoebe, but I have to admit I don't "love" it, but it most certainly suits her. Middle name is also Elizabeth. She gets it shortened to Pheebs by her friends, and it's constantly spelt wrong which annoys the hell out of her. She was called Phoebe when she was born as I felt she looked like a Phoebe, the name wasn't pre-planned at all as I actually liked Amber most.

Have to say, I love the name Annie.

Sleepycat91 · 22/01/2020 22:15

Phoebe was a big contender for me with both pregnancies, my OH said no to everything i liked and there was only 1 or 2 names for both we eventually agreed on.

Sandsnake · 22/01/2020 22:28

Thanks very much for all thoughts so far, much appreciated! The love for Anna and Annie is giving us a lot of food for thought... It’s tough, as names are so subjective - hence being very genuinely grateful for all your feedback.Smile

Anna is beautiful.

NameChange30 · 22/01/2020 22:32

My favourite is Phoebe but if it doesn't work with the surname I would probably rule it out.

I really like Juno. (Also like Joni!)

Anna NN Annie would be nice and probably unusual for her generation (more common for ours, I know several).

I don't like Matilda personally. It seems both harsh and fussy somehow.

Winecheesesleep · 22/01/2020 22:37

Probably not too helpful but I love them all. I really like Juno but probably wouldn't have used it as I've gone for more traditional names. I doubt anyone will still be thinking of the film in 10 years. Anna was on my shortlist for DD and Annie is so cute.

BigusBumus · 22/01/2020 23:03

My name is Anna (I'm 48). I've never heard it have the nickname Annie as I think that's a totally separate name really. You're either an Anna or Annie. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like you wouldn't call your daughter Hannah and have the nn Anna. Different names.

I love my name and was a tiny bit gutted it was getting popular due to Frozen. Although is it spelt /pronounced differently in that? (Never seen it, I have teenage boys).

Astronica · 23/01/2020 02:48

I love all the names on your list. Juno is more quirky than the others but is a great name and my favourite I think. I don't think it's necessarily linked with the film any more. If you don't like the usual short forms then Matilda is a bit risky. You could just use Tilda and it may be less likely to be shortened? Anna is a stylish traditional name and Annie works perfectly as a nickname.

Anna Elizabeth is just lovely. Go for it!

dairyfairies · 23/01/2020 05:56

Juno!

Popsicle30 · 23/01/2020 06:26

I vote Anna but I am bias as I have a 5 year old Anna and we sometimes call her Annie. I still love the name. She’s the only one in her class and I have only come across one other of her age over the years at baby groups etc.

Of your other options I also like Mathilda.

Lolacherrycola78 · 23/01/2020 07:24

I have a Matilda and love the name, she gets so many comments. She is 4 and her name does not get shortened!
I also like the name phoebe, that was on my list xx

Graceymac99 · 23/01/2020 07:32

I have a 7yr old Anna, I love her name. She is the only girl in her year with that name. I never use Annie as a nickname. I know another child named Annie though as her formal name.

ParsleyPot · 23/01/2020 07:34

Anna

mytypeonpaper · 23/01/2020 07:38

I know a few Anna babies but it just seems so bland to me I don't like it. Annie is cute.
Matilda I love but like you I can't find any NN that I like
Phoebe i love

Whatsyourflava · 23/01/2020 08:28

I love anna nickname Annie - gorgeous

I know two adult Anna’s that often use their nickname Annie

It’s a name that’s very underused these days

Chirpychirpy3 · 23/01/2020 08:37

Anna by a mile

emmathedilemma · 23/01/2020 08:42

I love them all except for Juno.

SoftBlocks · 23/01/2020 08:48

Phoebe or Anna. There might be a surge in popularity for Phoebe after Fleabag...
