What does everybody think about the name Lilith? Possibly Lili as a nickname.

OP posts:

This was what my partner wanted to call my daughter. So I looked up the meaning...

Lilith is a figure in Jewish mythology, developed earliest in the Babylonian Talmud. Lilith is often envisioned as a dangerous demon of the night, who is sexually wanton, and who steals babies in the darkness.

To which the answer was no.

KittenMittens1 · 22/01/2020 09:50

Lily yes, Lilith not a massive fan of.

& the above description would very much put me off haha

deareloise · 22/01/2020 09:54

I think it’s really pretty and I like Lily / Lili.

Sicario · 22/01/2020 09:55

Watch a few episodes of Frasier.

Jeleste · 22/01/2020 09:59

Lilith is used in lots of series as name for female demons.
So that would put me off.
I quite like the name though.

Mischance · 22/01/2020 10:01

I doubt many people would know the derivation. If you like it, then use it.

MrsBertBibby · 22/01/2020 10:01

Lilith is older than the Jewish demon, she was a female spirit of darkness, night, freedom (including sex) but of course, the misogynistic old patriarchal types couldn't have that so they, quite literally, demonized her.

I'd consider it.

99bb · 22/01/2020 10:02

Makes me think of Frazier’s wife... I kind of like it

Bibidy · 22/01/2020 10:07

Watch a few episodes of Frasier.

LOL will put you off for sure.

Scatterlit · 22/01/2020 10:07

I like it. There’s another Jewish source, the Alphabet of Ben Sira, which has Lilith as Adam’s first wife, made by God from clay like him, and who said that she and Adam were equal and would not submit to him — so was subsequently punished by being turned into a sexual demon for her independence etc. Also the name of a Jewish feminist newspaper.

And I like Lilith in Frasier.

Bear2014 · 22/01/2020 10:09

We know one, she's super cool and I have never heard any comments on it.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 22/01/2020 10:10

On the baby names that are never coming back I put Lilith as one of the options. It doesn’t have a nice meaning.

Groovee · 22/01/2020 10:12

I know a few Lilith's now. They suit it and I quite like it.

Yika · 22/01/2020 10:14

I like it. I wasn't aware of the origins. I don't think that would put me off.

Scatterlit · 22/01/2020 10:25

It doesn’t have a nice meaning.

Asserting yourself to be man's equal is a pretty nice meaning.

CeibaTree · 22/01/2020 10:44

Love it and it's meaning. Very strong name, but can be shortened/sweetened to Lily if needs be. Also reminds me of Frasier's ex-wife but she was a pretty cool character :)

Astronica · 22/01/2020 12:32

I like it.

sickandtiredofsick · 22/01/2020 12:33

I couldn’t but because of the character Lilith in children of the dust
She took the babies who had been born after a nuclear holocaust and wouldn’t survive and laid them out in the snow it broke my heart reading that at 15 I cried !

Bluerussian · 22/01/2020 13:02

No! It means:
Lilith is a figure in Jewish mythology, developed earliest in the Babylonian Talmud. Lilith is often envisioned as a dangerous demon of the night, who is sexually wanton, and who steals babies in the darkness.

Why would you saddle a poor kid with that?

MyuMe · 22/01/2020 19:51

The demon girl in Case 39 was called Lilith

Not a great meaning.

MyuMe · 22/01/2020 19:53

Hadn't realised that clip was dubbed...Grin

BecauseReasons · 22/01/2020 19:54

I know one. Lovely name if you don't mind the meaning.

Disfordarkchocolate · 22/01/2020 19:56

I'm with @Scatterlit. Great name and great meaning.

joggingon · 22/01/2020 19:58

Frasier. My first thoughts.

helpfulperson · 22/01/2020 20:05

It's a lovely name but does make me think of Frasier.
