What does everybody think about the name Lilith? Possibly Lili as a nickname.

I quite like the name, and the meaning - the story of a woman who wouldn't do as she was told by men: jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/lilith

Spied · 22/01/2020 20:09

My first thought was that Lilith is something demonic/evil.

DesLynamsMoustache · 22/01/2020 20:10

Afraid it's irreconcilably linked to the demonic meaning for me. It's been use a lot in TV shows, films and books in recent years.

Raindancer411 · 22/01/2020 20:15

Has someone been watching The Witcher? Grin Joking aside I thought of it but then when I found out the meaning, I wasn't as keen.

BloodiedButUnbowed · 22/01/2020 20:17

Love it for exactly the feminist reasons given, which is why it’s my DD’s middle name. Bonus is that she’s now a striking card carrying goth, so that worked out well!

DramaAlpaca · 22/01/2020 20:36

No. It's pretty but I can't get past the meaning.

Marmighty · 22/01/2020 20:39

Came on to say no way don't you know what it means, but now I've read the responses from posters saying they love it I've done a 180. I'm not having any more DC but will definitely add it to the list for future pets.

Hepsibar · 22/01/2020 20:51

Yes, as others, not keen on Lilith, but variations of Lili, Lilly find adorable.

Wasnt the scary exwife of the psychiatrist in Cheers called Lilith ... sorry cant help being reminded ... ...

Herpesfreesince03 · 22/01/2020 20:52

I’ve watched too many horror movies and read too many books where the character called Lilith was deranged/deformed/demonic. Completely puts me off

SageRosemary · 22/01/2020 20:55

I like it

PavlovaTescobar · 22/01/2020 21:01

Lilith is a demon in "Supernatural". I also wonder if Harry Potter's mum Lily Potter's full name is meant to be Lilith. She is the female with magical powers, while Petunia is the human sister.

Veterinari · 22/01/2020 21:04

Agree it's a great strong feminist name. And sounds beautiful

Scatterlit · 22/01/2020 23:10

But the wanton/demonic legends are the flip side of the feminist challenge to Adam’s supremacy — no patriarchal legend was ever going to depict a woman refusing to submit to Adam and then going off and living happily after. So she gets punished by becoming a lascivious, baby-eating monster.

I also wonder if Harry Potter's mum Lily Potter's full name is meant to be Lilith. She is the female with magical powers, while Petunia is the human sister.

I just figured their parents gave them both flower names.

Enko · 23/01/2020 15:37

I love it but the meaning puts me off additionally dh and I are huge frasier fans so just could not do so

Bol87 · 25/01/2020 14:40

Lilith is def related to the devil/demon.. I have a friend with a Lilith & she’s very alternative/gothic! So it fits!

As a name alone, I find it a bit of a mouthful to say. I duno if it’s just my Yorkshire accent but it hurts my tongue! I trip over the letters at the end!

juneybean · 25/01/2020 14:43

My beautiful goddaughter has this name, her mum loved it since she was a teen for the aforementioned feminist reasons. She's not devilish in the slightest! Grin
